<p>Meall a&#39; Chrasgaidh is a Scottish mountain located in the Fannich group of mountains, 21 kilometres south-southeast of Ullapool.</p><br>
<h2>Overview</h2><br>
<p>The mountain is centrally located within the Fannichs and is one of the most accessible of the group with the A832 and A835 roads running just to the north. It lies on a north-south ridge along with the two other Munros of Sgurr nan Clach Geala and Sgurr nan Each and it is usually ascended along with them. Meall a&#39; Chrasgaidh is a rounded grassy hill which reaches the modest height of 934 metres (3064 ft), being the 242nd highest Munro. The mountains name translates as “Hill of the Crossing” and refers to the 819 metre col to the south of the summit which is the main crossing point in the Fannich group giving access north to south between lochs a’ Bhraoin and Fannich and also between the east and the west.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Meall a&#39; Chrasgaidh is made up of three distinct ridges, the NW and NE ridges both descend towards the valley of the River Droma and are used as ascent routes from the main roads to the north. The south ridge connects to the strategically important 819 col which is unnamed on maps, the col is boggy and has a small lochan lying within it. The col connects the mountain to the two highest peaks of the Fannichs, Sgurr nan Clach Geala and Sgurr Mòr.</p><br>
<p>The only steep slopes on the mountain are on its eastern side where rocky flanks descend to Loch a’ Mhadaidh, these slopes are moderately angled and give a scrambling route from the loch. This eastern side shows the mountain at its best and the steeper gradients are well seen from the loch. The western and southern slopes are less steep, they are mostly composed of grass with some heather, nearer the summit there are some exposed mica and quartz schist rocks (see picture) of which the whole mountain is composed. All drainage from Meall a&#39; Chrasgaidh goes to the west coast of Scotland, going via the River Broom and Loch Broom to reach the sea at Ullapool.</p><br>
<h2>Ascents and view</h2><br>
<p>Meall a&#39; Chrasgaidh is usually climbed directly from the north and usually in conjunction with some of the other hills of the Fannich range. There are two possible starting points for the northern approach. One starts at a parking spot on the A832 near Loch a’ Bhraoin (grid reference ) and ascends by the NW ridge after following a track by the Allt Breabaig for two km. The alternative route starts at the western end of Loch Droma on the A835 (grid reference ) and follows the Allt a’ Mhadaidh west for six km to reach Loch Mhadaidh under the eastern face. From here it is possible to ascend the grassy and rocky ground above the loch to reach the 819 metre col from where the summit can be reached via the south ridge. The continuation to other mountains in the group is by descending the south ridge to the 819 metre col.</p><br>
<p>The summit is crowned by a 5 ft cairn. The view is restricted to the south and SE by the Fannichs two highest mountains Sgurr nan Clach Geala and Sgurr Mòr, both of which look impressive, however in other directions there are fine views. There is a first-rate aspect of An Teallach, some 15 km to the NW across desolate moorland. Around to the north are the hills of Coigach and Assynt.</p><br>
<p>The Animal Wall  is a sculptured wall depicting 15 animals in the Castle Quarter of the city centre of Cardiff, Wales. It is a Grade I listed structure.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Animal Wall was designed by William Burges in 1866, but it was not built until 1890, after Burges&#39;s death in 1881. The work of the restoration of Cardiff Castle and the building of the Animal Wall for the Marquess of Bute, was continued by his former assistant William Frame. The original nine animal figures were sculptured by Thomas Nicholls, they were the hyena, wolf, apes, seal, bear, lioness, lynx, and 2 different lions. They were painted in naturalistic colours, although since then the paint work on the sculptures has been removed.</p><br>
<p>The wall was moved about 50 m from outside Cardiff Castle to its present location outside Bute Park in 1922, due to road widening in front of the castle in Duke Street and Castle Street (now the A4161).</p><br>
<p>In 1931 a further six animals were added; the pelican, ant-eater, raccoons, leopard, beaver and vulture. They were all sculptured by Alexander Carrick.</p><br>
<p>The original nine, sculpted by Thomas Nicholls, had glass eyes and were painted in naturalistic colours to make them seem even more lifelike. But the paint peeled after a couple of years and was never replaced, leaving the bare stone seen today.</p><br>
<p>The animals reached the peak of their popularity in the 1930s when the South Wales Echo ran a children’s cartoon strip – the Keepers of the Wall – that depicted them involved in adventures around the city.</p><br>
<p>Penned by Dorothy Howard Rowlands characters included William the seal, Priscilla the pelican, Martha and Oscar the monkeys, Larry the lynx and Romulus and Remus the two lions.</p><br>
<p>The inside of the castle also features animals carved in stone, including many lions, as these were a symbol of Lord Bute’s family.</p><br>
<p>In the 1970s Council planners had wanted to demolish the Animal Wall to widen the Castle Street again, but this idea was later abandoned.</p><br>
<p>As part of a £5.6 million refurbishment of Bute Park, restoration of the animals began in July 2010. During the repair, the anteater&#39;s nose, which has been missing since the late 90s, was replaced as well as the missing glass eyes in the nine original animals. This work was completed in October 2010.</p><br>

<p>Stråholmen is a small island off the coast of Kragerø and Bamble in southern Telemark, Norway. The island is about 1.5 km long and 1 km wide at the widest, and lies approximately 2 km north of the island Jomfruland. Stråholmen faces the Skagerrak seas to the east and provides shelter for the inner coast line. The name is Norwegian and literally translates to "The Islet of Straws".</p><br>
<h2>History and settlement</h2><br>
<p>At the center of the island lies a small settlement which today consists of cottages a leisure homes, populated mainly through the summer. The settlement on Stråholmen was originally created by the sailing ship piloting industry of the southern Telemark area, as the location is great for spotting ships arriving from the sea. By the late 1900s the settlement has lost its economical function as except for some sparse agricultural activity. The remainders of the settlement is considered an important part of the cultural inheritance of the shipping industry era of the southern Telemark district.</p><br>
<h2>Facilities and nature</h2><br>
<p>On the north side lies a sheltered dock and beach, frequently utilized as a recreation area for the local population and tourists. The dock is accessible by water taxi from nearby Kragerø, Valle (in Bamble) or Langesund, or by private vessel. The central settlement is reachable from the dock by a dirt path.</p><br>
<p>Stråholmen features several plants and tree types which are quite uncommon in the area, which were probably imported through seeds in ballast dirt during the shipping era. The island is great for hiking and the surrounding shores are considered good for sports fishing.</p><br>
<p>The bird life is rich, especially during the migration seasons. Ducks, geese and wading birds are especially abundant.</p><br>

<p>The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad South Cle Elum Rail Yard located in South Cle Elum, Washington, was a division point on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad&#39;s Coast Division. It was established by the railroad  in 1909 during construction of its "Pacific Extension".</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>After the completion of the first two transcontinental railroads into the Pacific Northwest, the Northern Pacific Railroad and the Great Northern Railway, The Milwaukee Road decided that in order to compete, it too must expand into the Northwest. It began construction on the Pacific Extension in 1906 and completed the rail line into Tacoma, Washington in 1909.</p><br>
<p>The Milwaukee Road placed division points approximately every 100 to 150 mi apart. The division point was where locomotives were serviced, where train crews came on and off duty, and where trains were sorted and rolling stock stored. In addition, depots or stations were also placed at division points in order for passengers or freight to get on or off trains.</p><br>
<p>The division point at Cle Elum (in what would be incorporated as the Town of South Cle Elum) was placed between the terminus at Tacoma and the next division point at Othello, Washington. Thus Cle Elum was the last crew change westbound before crossing the Cascade Range at Snoqualmie Pass and going into Seattle, Washington; as well as the first crew change eastbound from Seattle to Othello and beyond to the Midwest, the Twin Cities and Chicago, Illinois.</p><br>
<h2>The rail yard</h2><br>
<p>The rail yard at South Cle Elum consisted of the depot, the roundhouse (now a ruin), the turntable (also a ruin), ash pit, water tank (now a ruin), and the bunkhouse where train crews spent time between shifts. After The Milwaukee Road electrified around 1920, an electric substation and substation operators&#39; residences were also built at the rail yard.</p><br>
<h2>After The Milwaukee Road abandonment and Iron Horse State Park</h2><br>
<p>In 1980 The Milwaukee Road ceased service in Washington. It sold off much of its property. The bunkhouse became a bed and breakfast, the substation operators houses were taken over by private individuals who continue to live in them. In lieu of paying back taxes, the railroad transferred ownership of the main line and infrastructure to the state. The John Wayne Pioneer Wagons and Riders Association was instrumental in having the State of Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) take over the property and create a trail. In honor of the clubs activities, the trail was named the John Wayne Pioneer Trail. In 1985, the DNR transferred the trail to the State Parks and Recreation Commission who then created Iron Horse State Park. The remaining buildings such as the depot and substation, as well as the remains of the rail yard were integrated into the park.</p><br>
<p>The depot is now a museum operated for the park&#39;s benefit by the.</p><br>
<p>Because of the integrity of the buildings as well as the integrity of the setting, the rail yard and associated buildings were listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.</p><br>
<p>The Beaver Mills are a historic mill complex located at 93-115 Railroad Street in Keene, New Hampshire, United States. The complex consists of two late 19th century brick mill buildings, along with several adjacent support buildings including warehouses, garages, and a boiler house. The oldest buildings at the site date to 1871-2.</p><br>
<p>Mill #1 is located at 115 Railroad Street. Originally, the mill complex included two buildings, that were joined in c. 1920 to create a 3.5 story brick building. Both older buildings date to 1871-2, with the northern one having a three-story addition added in 1915. Mill #2, 93 Railroad Street, is also 3.5 stories tall, and architecturally resembles the eastern portion of the #1 mill. It was originally built 1871-2 with a cupola, which was destroyed by fire in 1889 and not rebuilt. A long, two story wood frame building extends west from this building. A c. 1980 concrete and metal addition nearly doubles the size of the main mill building.</p><br>
<p>The Beaver Mill complex was historically used for the construction of wood products, and served as an "incubator" for small wood-working enterprises, providing steam power and access to the railroads. Products produced in the complex include chairs, boxes, pails, and buckets. The complex was the largest mill in the city at the time, and is one of the few to survive. Mill #2 continues in industrial use, while Mill #1 has been rezoned for commercial uses.</p><br>
<p>The mill complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.</p><br>
<p>Stump Pond, also known as Reservoir MA94127, was a 113 acre reservoir in Pembroke, Massachusetts in the East Pembroke section of the town, east of the northern end of the Routes 14 and 53 concurrency, west of Keene Pond and southwest of Arnold School Pond. Stump Pond was drained in December 1992 due to the failure of an earthen dam on the north-west flank of the body of water adjacent to an inactive cranberry bog. The waterbody was built on existing swampland containing the tertiary streams which are headwaters to Pudding Brook that ultimately drains into the North River. It is unclear when the swampland was flooded to support private cranberry bog operations though it likely occurred sometime in the early to mid twentieth century. Stump Pond&#39;s legacy remains printed on paper and digital maps nearly 25 years after its draining. The land it once expanded across has undergone significant successional change and is now home to a wide variety of swampland wildlife and vegetation which likely inhabited the area prior to its flooding.</p><br>
<p>Mount Toby, 1,269 ft, is the highest summit of a sprawling collection of mostly wooded hills and knolls that rise from a distinct plateau-like upland in the towns of Sunderland and Leverett, Massachusetts, just east of the Connecticut River. This mountain mass, part of the Metacomet Ridge geology, is oval shaped and roughly three miles by two miles wide. Although three of the subordinate peaks have names of their own , none of them are noteworthy on their own, and the designation “Mount Toby” is most often used  to describe the entire geologic mass. <p>This article, therefore, describes the entire Mount Toby upland.</p><br>
<p>Mount Toby is notable for its high biodiversity, attractive woodlands, waterfalls, and its glacial kettle ponds (most notably Cranberry Pond). Although the summit is wooded, there is a fire tower, open to the public, which provides 360-degree views of Amherst and the Holyoke Range in the south; the Connecticut River and Mount Sugarloaf to the west; Mount Snow, Mount Ascutney, and Mount Monadnock in the north; and the nearby Peace Pagoda in Leverett to the east. Additionally, there are several cliffs located on the lower south and southwest facing slopes overlooking the Connecticut River Valley and the town of Sunderland.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Mount Toby is named for Captain Elnathan Toby, a settler from colonial Springfield, said to be the first Caucasian to summit the mountain. Like other peaks in the Connecticut River Valley in the 18th century, a resort hotel was built on the summit of Mount Toby, but it burned down a year after it was constructed, and was not rebuilt. The land was subsequently acquired by the Massachusetts Agricultural College (now the University of Massachusetts Amherst), and is currently part of the Mount Toby State Demonstration Forest owned and managed by the University.</p><br>
<h2>Geology and Ecosystem</h2><br>
<p>Geologically speaking, Mount Toby is composed of a sedimentary conglomerate base known as Mount Toby Conglomerate. It is associated with the geologic processes which created the Metacomet Ridge that extends through New England from Long Island Sound to the Vermont border. Mount Toby is part of a larger geologic layer cake. The bottom layer is composed of arkose sandstone, visible across the Connecticut River on Sugarloaf Mountain in Deerfield, Massachusetts. The middle layer is composed basalt; it is most visible as the geology of the Pocumtuck Ridge, to the north. The top (youngest) layer is composed of Mount Toby Conglomerate. About 200 million years ago, as the continent of North America began rifting apart from Africa and Eurasia, a series of erosion and deposition episodes interspersed with heavy basalt lava flows created this layer cake. Faulting and earthquakes tilted the layers diagonally; subsequent erosion and glacial activity exposed the tilted "layers" of sandstone, basalt, and erosion-resistant conglomerate visible today. Although not composed of trap rock, Mount Toby is a closely associated with the trap rock Metacomet Ridge by virtue of its origin via the same rifting and uplift that created those mountains.</p><br>
<p>Mount Toby like many of the hills and mountains of New England was formed by volcanism.</p><br>
<p>The west and south sides of Mount Toby drain via a series of brooks into Connecticut River, thence Long Island Sound. The east side drains into Long Plain Brook, thence the Connecticut River. The north side drains into Cranberry Pond Brook, thence the Connecticut River.</p><br>
<h2>Waterfalls</h2><br>
<p>Located on the east side of the mountain, is a series of waterfalls, pools, potholes, chutes, and cascades that plummet one hundred feet over rugged conglomerate ledges. The falls are most scenic in the spring and following periods of heavy precipitation; in the winter they are usually frozen over, and during dry periods the flow is often reduced to a trickle. Roaring Brook Falls is accessible by trail only. Gunn Brook Falls, located on the lower west side of the mountain, near the Connecticut River, and accessible via a short path from a public road, is smaller but has a more consistent flow. Slatestone Brook Falls, located on private property, is clearly visible from the road just north of Gunn Brook Falls. Slip Dog Falls is located in the center of the Mount Toby geography, west of the main summit and furthest from road access. A fifth waterfall, Green Swamp Brook Falls, is located on the south side of the massif, between the south ledges, just north of Bull Hill Road.</p><br>
<h2>Recreation</h2><br>
<p>Mount Toby and its subordinate peaks are a popular hiking destination; the mountain hosts a network of trails, and the 47 mi Robert Frost Trail crosses the summit and upland from south to north. With the exception of the Robert Frost Trail, many of the trails are poorly blazed. Because the surrounding lands are an educational and research forest, trees may also be marked with additional markings that may confuse hikers. Hikers should utilize recent topographic maps and orienteering skills to navigate the trail system. Horseback riding, fishing, ice skating, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and mountain biking are also enjoyed in the mountain&#39;s environs. Most of the public trailheads (on the east side of Mount Toby) are not directly accessible via public transportation. Sunderland is the closest bus stop via the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority; these buses allow the transportation of up to three bicycles.</p><br>
<h2>Conservation</h2><br>
<p>Although significant parcels on the mountain are protected—part of the Mount Toby State Demonstration Forest and other Massachusetts state holdings, or under easement or direct stewardship of the Nature Conservancy, the Trustees of Reservations, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, and local conservation commissions— the large proportion of the mountain is in private ownership, with the Cowls Lumber Company the most significant landowner.</p><br>
<p>Lytes Cary is a manor house with associated chapel and gardens near Charlton Mackrell and Somerton in Somerset, England. The property, owned by the National Trust, has parts dating to the 14th century, with other sections dating to the 15th, 16th, 18th, and 20th centuries. "Yet all parts blend to perfection with one another and with the gentle sunny landscape that surrounds them," comments Nikolaus Pevsner. The House is listed as Grade I by English Heritage.</p><br>
<p>The chapel predates the existing house, having been built around 1343, and functioned as a chantry chapel, where masses could be said for the souls of the family, both living and dead. The great hall was added in the 15th century and the Oriel Room in the 16th. Various renovations were undertaken during the 16th and 17th centuries after which the house fell into disrepair with the north range being demolished by the early 19th century. In 1907 Sir Walter Jenner of the Jenner baronets bought the house and restored it in a period style, furnishing it with fine 17th century and 18th century oak furniture, antique tapestries and fabrics modelled after medieval textiles, along with historic and period paintings. On his death in 1948 he left the house to the National Trust.</p><br>
<p>The gardens are listed as Grade II on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England. The original 17th-century gardens have disappeared. However, the Jenners laid them out in an Arts and Crafts style with a series of rooms, which are separated from each other by high, neatly clipped box and yew hedges. These are complemented by ponds and walks in and between each of the rooms.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The parkland surrounding the house includes the site of a deserted medieval settlement which is a scheduled monument.</p><br>
<p>The unusual name derives from the Lyte family who lived at Lytes Cary for over four centuries, and the River Cary which flows nearby. The first documentary evidence is from 1285 when it was known as Kari. William le Lyte was a feudal tenant of the estate in 1286, and the Lyte family occupied and added to the house until the mid 18th century. The earliest surviving part of the manor and associated buildings is the chapel, which dates to the mid-14th century.</p><br>
<p>The Great Hall was built in the mid-15th century, and in the early 16th century the entrance porch and oriel room was added to the eastern side of the hall, and the great parlour and little parlour to the south of the hall, with bedrooms above. Sometime after the Lyte family sold the Manor in 1755, tenants moved in and the house gradually fell into disrepair. In 1810 it was reported by a neighbour that the north range had lately been destroyed and a farm house built on the site, (this north range is dated by architectural historians to the late 18th century) and by the time John Buckler came to draw the house in 1835 the west range had also disappeared.</p><br>
<p>In 1907 Sir Walter Jenner of the Jenner baronets and son of the late Sir William Jenner, physician to Queen Victoria, bought Lytes Cary. At that time the Great Hall was being used as a cider store and the Great Parlour was full of farm equipment. Jenners brother Leopold had just bought and started to restore Avebury Manor in Wiltshire, and Jenner was inspired by his brothers work there. He set about restoring Lytes Cary and decorating the interiors in period style, including fine 17th century and 18th century oak furniture, antique tapestries and fabrics modelled after medieval textiles. He had the west range rebuilt in a plain William and Mary style by the architect C.E. Ponting, but left the historic core of the house mostly untouched. It incorporates carvings believed to be from the demolished St Benet Gracechurch.</p><br>
<p>Jenner left the manor to the National Trust after he died in 1948. The house was designated as a Grade I listed building in 1959. The National Trust opened the west range as a holiday rental property in 2006. Only the older parts of the house are open to the public.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<h3>House</h3><br>
<p>The two-storey house and the chapel are built of the local Blue Lias stone. Parts of the house have mellow honey-coloured Hamstone dressings, especially around windows and at quoins; the later 18th century additions have brick dressings. The roofs are stone tiled with some later terracotta tiles.</p><br>
<h3>Chapel</h3><br>
<p>The chapel predates the existing house, and functioned as a chantry chapel, where masses could be said for the souls of the family, both living and dead. It was built by Peter Lyte in about 1343, and was completed by 1358, and would have served both the original manor which now no longer survives and later the existing house. It has a small window, or squint, that permitted servants and others to observe communion from the house.</p><br>
<p>The chapel was thoroughly renovated in 1631 by Thomas Lyte, who installed the arch-braced-collar truss roof, the communion rail, a rear screen and a frieze below the roof painted with the arms of the Lytes and their relations. A monument to the south of the altar records Thomas&#39; work on the chapel. In 1912 Sir Walter Jenner added the stained glass, including medieval glass said to have come from Charlton Mackrell church which William Le Lyte had commissioned before his death in 1316.</p><br>
<h3>Great Hall</h3><br>
<p>This structure was built in the mid-15th century. At the southern end is a shallow raised dais on which the Lytes and favoured guests would have sat at a long table, facing the rest of the hall where the servants would have dined. The roof has arch-braced-collar trusses, with double purlins, and cusped curved windbraces. Typical of West Country design, these carved windbraces are both decorative and practical. Beneath is a cornice of pierced quatrefoils, and at the base of each main rafter is a carved wooden angel with a shield with the Lyte arms. The fireplace is 15th century, while the windows and the stained glass in them date from the early 16th century. The hall is entered from the east front porch via the screens passage, which would have divided the Hall from the kitchen and servants quarters which would have lain to the left of the hall. The screen and gallery are not original, having been inserted by Sir Walter Jenner in 1907. He based the decoration on that of the arch from the Great Hall through to the Oriel Room. At the time of Jenners arrival in 1907 the Great Hall was being used as a cider store.</p><br>
<p>The Great Hall is furnished with mostly 17th century oak furniture, including tables, coffers and wainscot chairs, and a great dining table, on which stand two blue and white late 17th century Delftware pyramidal tulip vases. One treasure of the home is the Lytes Herbal, a 16th-century botanical volume by noted horticulturist Henry Lyte, who was born and resided at the manor. Lyte&#39;s Niewe Herball was published in 1578 and was a translation and elaboration of the Cruydeboeck of Flemish herbalist Rembert Dodoens. The herbal was dedicated to Queen Elizabeth. A copy is displayed in the Great Hall.</p><br>
<h3>Oriel Room</h3><br>
<p>This was added to the south of the Great Hall in the early 16th century to provide a small intimate room where the family could eat in private away from the servants. Above it is the small Oriel Bedroom, probably originally a dressing room for the Great Chamber as its only entrance is via that room. At the same time that the oriel room and bedroom were added, rooms were added or remodeled to the south of the Great Hall: the Great Parlour with Great Chamber above, and the Little Parlour with Little Parlour above. John Lyte, the builder, placed his coat of arms on the outside of the building.</p><br>
<h3>Great Parlour</h3><br>
<p>This was the main family sitting room on the ground floor, with the south-facing grand window giving views to the gardens, and was remodelled by John Lyte in 1533. In the early 17th century Thomas Lyte added the wood paneling (including Ionic pilasters) and the internal porch: these decorative features also had the practical benefit of keeping out the drafts. In the 20th century the room was being used as a store for farm equipment. Sir Walter Jenner had the paint stripped from the panelling to reveal the original warm-coloured oak.</p><br>
<p>Above is the Great Chamber, an impressive room with a barrel ceiling with geometrical plaster decoration featuring John Lytes arms and those of his wife, Edith Horsey. This ceiling is a rare survival. The wall above the bed displays the royal coat of arms and Tudor roses, signifying Lytes loyalty to King Henry VIII (whose government Lyte represented in Somerset). The panelling is 17th century, as are the great four poster bed and the tapestries on the walls. Some of the original oak panelling of the room may have been used in the construction of the canopy of the bed.</p><br>
<h3>Little Parlour</h3><br>
<p>This smaller room may have been used by Henry and Thomas Lyte for their studies. It too has later paneling and an alcove in which are displayed a collection of early glassware. Above this room is the Little Chamber, used by Sir Walter Jenner as his bedroom. The bed came from Burton Pynsent House in Somerset, a house given to William Pitt the Elder by an admirer of his achievements as prime minister.</p><br>
<h3>Paintings</h3><br>
<p>Sir Walter Jenner furnished the rooms with furniture and included historic and newly commissioned paintings. The paintings include: portraits of Lady Catherine Neville by Robert Peake James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth and Mary II of England by Sir Peter Lely and William III of England by Godfrey Kneller, along with landscapes by Jan Wyck and Jack Green. Oil paintings of horses by George Denholm Armour and George Richard Pain are also included in the extensive collection.</p><br>
<h2>Gardens</h2><br>
<p>All trace of Henry Lyte&#39;s garden has disappeared. Records show that his son Thomas kept a very well-stocked orchard, which included in 1618 "Apples, 3 skore severall sorts. pears and Wardens (a type of pear), 44 sorts. Plummes, 15 divers kynds. Grapes, 3 severall sortes. Cherries, 1. Walnuts, 3. Peaches, 1." By the Victorian period the garden had run to seed, and so the Jenners had to start from scratch on their arrival in 1907. They had the gardens designed and constructed to include a series of hedged and walled "rooms" with topiary, specimen trees, a pool, statuary, croquet lawn, walkways, an Elizabethan orchard, and a herbal border that includes plants described in the Lytes Herbal. The gate piers at the east and west entrances are listed buildings.</p><br>
<p>The gardens were constructed in a series of rooms, which are separated from each other by high, neatly clipped box and yew hedges. The gardens were influenced by the Arts and Crafts style popular at the time. The Jenners had a garden staff of four.</p><br>
<p>In 1965 Graham Stuart Thomas, the National Trusts first Gardens Adviser designed the Main Border. From 1955-1997 the Trusts tenants at the Manor, Biddy and Jeremy Chittenden, transformed the garden, and Biddy rethought and replanted the main border in 1996, using new plants but following Stuart Thomas&#39;s colour scheme.</p><br>
<p>The gardens are listed as Grade II on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England. A barn and other outbuildings north west of the house are listed buildings.</p><br>
<p>The Apostle garden is aligned on the front door in the East front of the house and a building which has been described as a water tower, built by the Jenners in imitation of the dovecote at Avebury Manor, which was wrongly identified as a Dovecote by English Heritage. The garden is a severe, formal approach, flanked by topiarised yews, and is "deliberately low-key and simple so as not to distract from the beauty of the building". The main border is 35 m long and at its best in midsummer. The flowers grade from blues and yellows, through creams and apricots to pinks, mauves and reds. There is a restful White Garden beyond for contrast.</p><br>
<p>The orchard contains fruit trees such as quinces, medlars, crab apples and pears are underplanted with spring-flowering meadow plants such as snakeshead fritillaries, camassias, narcissus, cowslips and ladys smock. The orchard is crossed by wide mown paths meeting at a central sundial. Originally four weeping elms were situated at the four corners of the garden, but they succumbed to Dutch elm disease in the early seventies and were replaced in 1973 by four weeping ash trees which make inviting houses&#39;. The orchard can be viewed from the raised walk on its east side, another idea copied from Avebury Manor. A main path known as the Long walk is based on the Long Walk at Hidcote Manor Garden in Gloucestershire, although it is on a smaller scale. It is a plain grassed walkway connecting the Raised Walk with the Pond Garden.</p><br>
<p>The pond garden, seat garden and croquet lawn are interlinked, with aligned openings to form a vista from the bay windows of the Great Parlour and Great Chamber on the south front of the house over to the Sparkford plain. A short tunnel of hornbeams link the Pond Garden to the Vase Garden, where variegated weigela is underplanted with euphorbia and vinca.</p><br>
<p>Blooming Grove United Church of Christ, also known just as Blooming Grove Church and formerly known as The Congregational Church of Blooming Grove, is located at the junction of Old Dominion Road and NY 94 in the Town of Blooming Grove, between the villages of Chester and Washingtonville in Orange County, New York, United States. It is a plain white Federal style building, notable for lacking the steeple or cupola commonly found on churches.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The church itself was formed in 1758 as a Presbyterian congregation. It had enough members that it was able to buy land for a meetinghouse the following year, the exact site of which is not known. Growth continued, and by 1823 it was necessary to expand.</p><br>
<p>The members decided that instead of expanding the existing structure they would sell it and buy new land for a new church with the proceeds. Shortly afterwards, the old building was razed. Only some of the interior woodwork has been preserved.</p><br>
<p>As was common at the time, construction also was financed by subscription: families would buy pews in their name, essentially making them partners in the church. The new building, designed by architect Joseph Cromwell, was 75 feet (23 m) by 63 feet (19 m). It had a sloping floor and box pews, with a gallery behind the pulpit. The builders used the king and queen post method of roof support, so that the sanctuary is completely open, with no interior pillars or columns obstructing anyone&#39;s view of the pulpit.</p><br>
<p>In another practice common at the time, pews were built along the side of the church for congregants&#39; slaves. The walls were finished by a local plasterer who had perfected a putty-like look, the exact details of which he never revealed. It was finished and opened in 1824.</p><br>
<p>A decade later, the congregation broke with Presbyterianism after its then-pastor, James Arbuckle, was tried for heresy. It became a Congregational church, but did not rename itself as such until 1871.</p><br>
<p>The only major change to the interior of the church came in 1902, when locally-raised industrialist David Moffat bought a pipe organ in memory of his fathers service there as choirmaster. The addition caused considerable controversy within the congregation. One member went so far as to sue the church since his familys pew would have to be dismantled (the action was withdrawn).</p><br>
<p>In 1919, after World War I, the church dedicated a stained glass "Service Window" to honor Blooming Grove residents who had served in the military. Charles S. Whitman, then governor, came to the church to speak at the dedication ceremony.</p><br>
<p>The church arrived at its current denomination in 1957 when the Congregational Christian Churches merged with the Evangelical and Reformed Church and both became the United Church of Christ. In 1996 the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places, making it the first and so far only NRHP listing in the town.</p><br>
<p>Twillingate Islands  are a group of islands in Notre Dame Bay of the Island of Newfoundland in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The islands are mainly two islands, North Twillingate Island and South Twillingate Island and several smaller islands which lie in close proximity to those, the largest of those is Burnt Island.</p><br>
<p>The southern island is connected to New World Island via a causeway. The northern island is connected to the southern island by Tickle Bridge, which runs along Main Street in the town. The actual town of Twillingate is located on both islands.</p><br>

<p>Saturn V Dynamic Test Vehicle, designated SA-500D, is a prototype Saturn V rocket used by NASA to test the performance of the rocket when vibrated to simulate the shaking which subsequent rockets would experience during launch. It was the first full-scale Saturn V completed by the Marshall Space Flight Center . Though SA-500D never flew, it was instrumental in the development of the Saturn V rocket which propelled the first men to the Moon as part of the Apollo program. Built under the direction of Dr. Wernher von Braun, it served as the test vehicle for all of the Saturn support facilities at MSFC.</p><br>
<p>SA-500D is the only Saturn V on display that was used for its intended purpose, and the only one to have been assembled prior to museum display. It is on permanent display at the USA Space & Rocket Center, Huntsville, Alabama.</p><br>
<h2>Pre-flight configurations</h2><br>
<p>Before a Saturn V could launch, engineers needed to verify that their design had accounted for everything the rocket would encounter on its journey, from assembly to the launchpad and from Earth to the Moon. To validate the Saturn V design and procedures, they created five pre-flight configurations for testing. These configurations were subjected to tests simulating all aspects of flight preparations and flight itself, and all the tests needed to demonstrate satisfactory results before MSFC would certify the Saturn V to fly.</p><br>
<p>SA-500D was one of the five pre-flight configurations of the Saturn V. This configuration showed the Saturn Vs "bending and vibration characteristics" and verified "the adequacy of guidance and control systems design."</p><br>
<p>Other pre-flight configurations were:</p><br>
<p>Battleship Test model, used for initial engine firing and design improvements</p><br>
<p>Structural Test model, to certify the structure for loads during launch at the anticipated temperatures, and to assess the stiffness of each stage</p><br>
<p>SA-500F, the facilities checkout model, verify launch facilities, train launch crews, and develop test and checkout procedures.</p><br>
<p>SA-500T, All Systems Test model, for static firing of engines in the flight configuration</p><br>
<p>The vehicle designated SA-500D did not include an Apollo spacecraft, but boilerplate parts were used during testing to verify the entire system.</p><br>
<h2>Development of the test article</h2><br>
<p>The Saturn V consisted of three stages and an Instrument Unit (IU). The first stage, S-IC, delivered 7,610,000 lbf thrust and delivered the other stages to 200,000 ft. The third stage, S-IVB provided the final push to orbit and the trans-lunar injection burn to set the Apollo spacecraft on a course to the Moon. The IU was the guidance and control computer. SA-500D was the assembly of these components for dynamic testing.</p><br>
<p>The Saturn V Dynamic Test Stand with "electrodynamic shakers" provided a table capable not only of holding the Saturn V fully assembled and fueled, but also able to simulate the vibrations that would be generated by rocket engines.</p><br>
<p>The components used for testing were developed from 1964–66, and the tests conducted in 1966-67. Because the Saturn V shared some components with the Saturn IB, some of the components for SA-500D were initially used for dynamic testing with the Saturn IB stack.</p><br>
<p>In naming the individual stages, MSFC used the stage designation with a suffix indicating its purpose. For example, S-IC-D was the first stage, S-IC, for dynamic testing, and S-IC-1 was the first flight model of the first stage. Suffixes used were S, for structural, F for facilities, T for all-systems test, and D for dynamic testing.</p><br>
<p>Following is a history of each component of the dynamic test article in order of appearance.</p><br>
<h3>Apollo boilerplate</h3><br>
<p>Development of the test article started from the top. A boilerplate Apollo spacecraft, BP-27 together with LTA-2, was used for all configurations of dynamic testing. The boilerplate took the place of actual flight hardware. Boilerplate size, shape, mass and center of gravity were the same, but it was not necessary for the entire Apollo spacecraft to be complete to commence dynamic testing. The boilerplate was outfitted with instrumentation to record data for engineering study and evaluation.</p><br>
<p>BP-27 consisted of hardware specifically built for that configuration and some hardware reassigned from other designations. The Command Module and Launch Escape System were unique to BP-27. The Service Module SM-010 (formerly SM-006) and the Spacecraft Lunar Module Adapters SLA #1 were also assigned to BP-27.</p><br>
<p>BP-27 was accepted at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in late September, 1964.</p><br>
<p>Shortly thereafter, MSFC took delivery of the boilerplate Lunar Module, called a Lunar Test Article and designated LTA-2. LTA-2 is the only part of SA-500D to fly in space. It was refurbished, designated LTA-2R, and flew on Apollo 6.</p><br>
<p>BP-27 was used for Saturn IB dynamic testing, shipped to Kennedy Space Center to be a component of SA-500F, and shipped back to MSFC for full-stack testing with SA-500D.</p><br>
<h3>Third stage</h3><br>
<p>The third stage, S-IVB-D arrived at MSFC before any other Saturn V stages because it was destined for dynamic testing in the Saturn IB first. It was assembled by Douglas near Los Angeles. With ceremony and dignitaries for the first Douglas-built S-IVB stage, it set out by barge December 8, 1964, and made its way to New Orleans via the Panama Canal, the Mississippi, Ohio, and Tennessee Rivers to MSFC, where it arrived on January 4, 1965. The same day, MSFC took delivery of the first stage of the Saturn IB for dynamic and facilities checkout testing, S-IB-D/F. The parts were assembled together with the instrument unit designated S-IU-200D/500D (see below) and BP-27 for dynamic testing in the Saturn IB configuration from February to September 1965 before it was allocated to the Saturn V configuration.</p><br>
<h3>Instrument Unit</h3><br>
<p>The Saturn V Instrument Unit served as the electronics hub for the first three stages of the rocket, controlling engine firing, guidance, stage separation, and climate for the three stages below. It consisted of two main parts, a rigid ring for structure, and within that, electronics.</p><br>
<p>Instrument units had a slightly different numbering scheme than the other parts. S-IU-200D/500D was for use with the SA-200D dynamic test article - a Saturn IB, and also for use with SA-500D, the Saturn V.</p><br>
<p>IBM won the contract to build electronics for the IU, and so, by 1964, constructed a $14 million four-building complex including a manufacturing facility with clean room in Huntsville.</p><br>
<p>The IUs structural ring had two responsibilities: provide a mounting location for IBMs electronics and hold everything on top of it. It needed to be structurally sound enough to hold the weight of the Lunar Module, Service Module, Command Module and the three astronauts during the acceleration provided by three mighty stages of rocket beneath. The rings were all fabricated at MSFC.</p><br>
<p>The IU for SA-500D was not the first built. MSFC built S-IU-200V/500V for vibration testing from September to November 1964. Wyle Labs tested it as part of the Saturn I-B program.</p><br>
<p>S-IU-200D/500D was the second IU to be built, with the ring completed in January 1965 and electronic components from IBM installed by February 1. It was the last piece necessary for dynamic testing in the Saturn IB program. It was stacked together with S-IVB-D, S-IB-D, and BP-27 for Saturn IB testing through much of 1965. On October 8, 1965, it began dynamic testing for the Saturn V program as part of SA-500D.</p><br>
<h3>First stage</h3><br>
<p>MSFC built the first three S-IC test first stages for the Saturn V: S-IC-T, the S-IC-S, and the S-IC-F. They also built the first two flight stages, S-IC-1 and S-IC-2. S-IC-D was the first to be built by Boeing at the Michoud Assembly Facility, New Orleans using the tooling that had been developed in Huntsville.</p><br>
<p>S-IC-D, was under construction on September 9, 1965 when Hurricane Betsy struck the Michoud Assembly Facility. The building housing the stage sustained severe damage, but the stage itself was repaired promptly.</p><br>
<p>S-IC-D set out on the maiden voyage of NASA barge Poseidon to Marshall Space Flight Center on October 6, 1965 and arrived at MSFC October 13. The first stage was lifted into place in the Dynamic Test Stand January 13, 1966 in the picture top right. Said one observer, "Fog and clouds hovered around the top of the 360 foot tall test stand most of the day while the 300,000 lb stage was being lifted from its transporter into place inside the stand, said to be the tallest building in Alabama."</p><br>

<h3>Second stage</h3><br>
<p>The second stage of SA-500D had a complex history. The second stage, S-II-D had been on order, but that part was cancelled February 19, 1965. The plan was to use another test article for dynamic testing as well as its other purpose. Two such test articles were destroyed during testing after having been designated for the dynamic test phase. The actual article used in SA-500D was named in the third re-allocation, when S-II-F, the facilities checkout article, was designated S-II-F/D.</p><br>
<p>S-II-S, which North American Aviation&#39;s Space and Information Systems Division (S&ID) at Seal Beach had completed by January 31, was re-designated as S-II-S/D to be used for dynamic testing. S-II-S/D would not survive its final structural test on September 29, 1965, but the test was exercising considerable margin above the structural integrity required for flight.</p><br>
<p>In January 1966, the all-systems test S-II-T was re-designated S-II-T/D, so that it might be used for dynamic testing as well as engine firing. S-II-T/D completed integrated checkout of ground support facilities at MTF on February 3, 1966. S-II-T/D&#39;s engines were fired five times at MTF from April to May, including a full-duration test. On May 28, 1966, S-II-T/D was undergoing a pressure test to find a hydrogen leak, but the hydrogen pressure sensors and switches had been disconnected unbeknownst to the second-shift crew when they tried to pressurize the tank. Five technicians sustained minor injuries. MSFC convened an investigation that night, and the team completed the report in two days.</p><br>
<p>After the S-II-T/D destruction, a third article was assigned to dynamic test duties. Facilities checkout article S-II-F became the dynamic test article designated S-II-F/D. S-II-F was shipped from S&ID, Seal Beach, California on February 20, 1966, to Kennedy Space Center where it arrived March 4. It filled in the final part of SA-500F to check out facilities for processing the Saturn V, replacing a dumbbell-shaped temporary stage of the same length and weight as an S-II stage. SA-500F was assembled in the Vehicle Assembly Building where it was mated to S-IC-F on March 28 and S-IVB-F the next day.</p><br>
<p>SA-500F was completed in the VAB, tested for stability against swaying in the wind, and rolled out to the launch pad May 25, 1966, on Mobile Launcher 1.</p><br>
<p>Hurricane Alma interrupted exercises as SA-500F was rolled back to the VAB on June 8, though the ground crew supposed the rollback was more of an exercise than necessity because winds remained below critical for the entire storm.</p><br>
<p>After facilities checkout at KSC was completed, the remaining components of SA-500F were then transferred to MSFC for inclusion in SA-500D: the Apollo boilerplate BP-27 and S-II-F/D. The second stage was modified for dynamic testing, and shipped by Posideon from KSC on October 29 to arrive at MSFC November 10, 1966.</p><br>
<h2>Dynamic testing</h2><br>
<p>Engineers needed a detailed knowledge of the space vehicle&#39;s dynamic flight characteristics to design structural, guidance, and flight control systems. They initially used analytical data that had not been substantiated by test for design criteria. The Dynamic Test Vehicle test project determined the dynamic characteristics of the space vehicle and verified earlier analyses.</p><br>
<p>The objectives of the dynamic tests were to:</p><br>
<p>Dynamic tests came in three configurations, one for each phase of Saturn V-powered flight. Configuration I focused on testing the entire stack, as if the vehicle had just launched. Configuration II exercised the stack as if the first stage had jettisoned and the second stage were firing, and configuration III tested just the third stage and Apollo spacecraft. Tests began with Configuration III in the Saturn IB Dynamic Test Facility, while the Saturn V Dynamic Test Stand, first, and second stages were still under construction. Configuration I testing followed in the Saturn V Dynamic Test Stand, then Configuration II in the same place.</p><br>
<p>Configuration III testing took place in late 1965.</p><br>
<p>Configuration I dynamic tests required the first stage of the Saturn V, which was loaded into the test stand January 13, 1966. Testing would have to wait for the last piece, the second stage, to arrive.</p><br>
<p>With all the components at MSFC as of November 10, 1966, the second stage was stacked atop the first inside the Dynamic Test Stand on November 23. The third stage was added to the stack November 30, and the Instrument Unit and boilerplate Apollo were installed in December. The rocket was stacked and ready for "Configuration One" testing.</p><br>
<p>Configuration One Testing ran from January through March. Testing produced "several minor irregularities indicating the need for possible engineering changes" which were addressed during March, 1967.</p><br>
<p>Configuration Two testing followed, in which the first stage was removed from the stack to simulate conditions after the first stage had jettisoned.</p><br>
<p>Dynamic testing examined "the vehicle&#39;s response to lateral, longitudinal, and torsional excitation, simulating those that would be experienced in flight. The vehicle was "mounted on a hydrodynamic support system made up of four hydraulic/pneumatic pedestals to permit a simulated unrestrained reaction." Engineers tested vibrations in one plane at a time with different amounts of ballast simulating "fuel load at critical time points in the flight trajectory."</p><br>
<p>NASA historian Mike Wright summarizes the testing:</p><br>
<p>On August 3, 1967, MSFC announced the successful completion of the dynamic test program, thereby declaring dynamics and structures of the Saturn V ready for its first launch later in the year. The dynamic testing resulted in "several slight modifications" to the final flight vehicle.</p><br>
<p>The first Saturn V launch came three months later, with Apollo 4. The dynamic test article LTA-2 was refurbished and flown on the next Saturn V launch, Apollo 6.</p><br>
<p>After dynamic testing, the second stage returned to KSC for a time for launchpad B checkout.</p><br>
<h2>Public display</h2><br>
<p>After all tests were complete, the SA-500D was reassembled in Huntsville, this time for public exhibition at the Alabama Space Science Center, on land carved out of the north edge of Marshall Space Flight Center. Transport of the rocket, along with the Saturn I which would be erected vertically, to the museum, took place June 28, 1969. The rocket would be displayed lying down on the southern edge of a rocket park with its predecessor rockets, near a Saturn 1 standing erect and a moonscape complete with model Lunar Module and a flag. SA-500D was installed in 1969, and the (renamed) Alabama Space and Rocket Center opened in 1970 showcasing articles that could otherwise only be seen by NASA and Army workers at Redstone Arsenal. The first stage sat on a low-boy trailer and the others in cradles. The instrument unit was put on display inside the museum, and connector rings were given roofs and converted to educational rides for the museum.</p><br>
<p>SA-500D was added to the List of Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmarks by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1980 and declared a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service in 1987.</p><br>
<p>In 1989, the museum assumed its current name, USA Space & Rocket Center.</p><br>
<h3>Restoration</h3><br>
<p>After decades of the vehicle resting unprotected outdoors, the USA Space & Rocket Center commissioned the restoration of the vehicle in 2005. Analysis by Conservation Solutions, Incorporated determined significant damage from both weather and pest infestations. Various materials comprising the vehicle, including metal alloys and non-metal materials such as polyurethane foam and fiberglass, exhibited significant deterioration. After conducting the analysis, full restoration of the Saturn V vehicle began in June 2005.</p><br>
<p>Restoration culminated in July 2007 when the Saturn V was moved into a building designed as protection for the artifact and to provide additional museum facilities. The move took place from July 10 to approximately July 17, starting with the first stage. The Davidson Center for Space Exploration opened in January 2008.</p><br>
<p>On May 3, 2012, an unknown person fired three.308 caliber bullets from Interstate 565 at the Davidson Center, breaking three windows. Two bullets struck SA-500D&#39;s third stage marring paint and leaving dents. No people were harmed. The damage was repaired within two months.</p><br>
<h3>Components on display</h3><br>
<p>This display consists of S-IC-D, S-II-F/D, and S-IVB-D, S-IU-200D/500D, CSM-010, an SLA, and BP-23A.</p><br>
<p>BP-23 launched for A-002 to test the Launch Escape System and recovery parachutes on December 8, 1964. It was refurbished, designated BP-23A, and exercised the Launch Escape System again in Launch Pad Abort Test 2, June 29, 1965.</p><br>
<p>BP-27, the dynamic test boilerplate article, is on display at the USA Space and Rocket Center atop the vertical Saturn I.</p><br>
<p>Other Apollo and Saturn artifacts on display include the Apollo 16 Command Module, the Apollo 12 Mobile Quarantine Facility, a Lunar Lander with a test article landing stage (MSFC 76545) and a replica ascent stage, and another Instrument Unit.</p><br>
<p>Canim Lake is a lake in British Columbia, Canada. Its west end is 36 km northeast of 100 Mile House. "Canim" means a type of large canoe in the Chinook Jargon. Canim Lake is 26.5 km long. It is also part of the territory of the Shuswap First Nation where the ancestors are part of the Lake Division of the Shuswap Tribe of the Interior Nations of British Columbia. The Reilly Commission states that the 2,029 hectares region around Canim Lake are set aside for the Shuswap First Nation. In the summer of 1995, there was an archaeological evidence of an ancient civilization and evidence of carbon dated as 4,300 old.</p><br>
<h2>Activities</h2><br>
<p>Canim Lake is known for its summer and winter activities. During the summer, activities like fishing, hiking, horseback riding, canoeing and kayaking can be enjoyed. Many lodges located around the lake provide horse adventures for both novice and experienced riders. Some lodges provide overnight trips or one week trips. Since there is a huge area of backcountry, activities like hiking and mountain biking can be done during the summer. Canim Lake is also a well known area to go freshwater fishing. Many types of fish can be caught like the Kokanee, rainbow trout, lake trout, and the lingcod. Wildlife can be seen such as black bears, moose, deer, wolves, coyotes, cougars, beavers, otters, waterfowl, hawks, bald eagles and song birds.</p><br>
<p>Winter activities include snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, dogsledding and ice fishing.</p><br>
<h2>Places to See</h2><br>

<p>The size of the lake can allow strong winds to build up which, combined with numerous submerged trees and rocks and a variable water level (due to fluctuations in water demand at the dam), can make Rossignol extremely dangerous for canoes and even small boats. <p>Several canoe guides are available that cover Rossignol and the surrounding area. Low Landing, which is cited as a launch point in several guides, is private property and should only be used with permission of the owners. An alternate launch point is the River Road, which is crown (public) land.</p><br>
<p>Mont Dolent  is a mountain in the Mont Blanc massif which lies on the border between Italy, Switzerland and France.</p><br>
<p>As a mountain, Mont Dolent is regarded as the tripoint between Italy, Switzerland and France, although the tripoint itself lies at 3,749 metres, less than 100 metres north-west of its summit.</p><br>
<p>The first ascent of the mountain was made on 9 July 1864 by A. Reilly and Edward Whymper with guides Michel Croz, H. Charlet and M. Payot. Whymper described the ascent in Scrambles amongst the Alps:</p><br>
<p>Mont Dolent has four faces, offering good quality snow and ice climbs of various levels of difficulty. However the only straightforward route to the summit (graded PD) is on its southern flank via the Glacier de Pre de Bar, finishing along a short and exposed stretch of the south-east ridge. The Fiorio Bivouac Hut (also known as Refuge Bivouac du Dolent) provides the closest start point for this four-hour ascent from the Italian side. The next easiest route of ascent(graded AD) is via the mountain&#39;s east ridge, starting from the similarly-named Bivouac du Dolent (la Maye) hut on its Swiss side.</p><br>

<p>Plevroma  is a village in the Pella regional unit of Macedonia, Greece. It is part of the community Petraia within the municipality of Skydra. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of 261.</p><br>
<p>The nearest train stations, on the OSE&#39;s Thessaloniki–Bitola railway, are 1.3 km east (Petria), 4.2 km southeast (Episkopi) and 6 km northeast (Skydra).</p><br>

It sits at an elevation of around 70 meters above mean sea level and the population is approximately 300 inhabitants.</p><br>
<p>Plevroma is located 539 kilometers northwest of the present day Greek capital Athens by road, 37 kilometers north of Vergina, the royal capital of ancient Macedon and 76 kilometers northwest of Thessaloniki, the present day capital of Greek Macedonia.</p><br>

<p>Farley Ledges, 1,067 ft is a bluff knob located on the southeast side of Northfield Mountain in eastern Franklin County, Massachusetts. The ledge is notable for its extensive rock climbing ascents; it rises 700 ft above the small village of Farley  and has been used by rock climbers since the 1930s. The Western Massachusetts Climbers Coalition has been active in purchasing land to preserve access to the mountain; 2007 purchases included a parcel along Route 2 developed into a trailhead with a parking lot and access corridor to the ledges. The 110 mi Metacomet-Monadnock Trail ascends the wooded north side of the ledges where Briggs Brook Falls tumbles from the ridgecrest; a marked rock climbing access loop trail departs from the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail to traverse both the summit of the ledges and the extensive boulder field beneath.</p><br>
<p>Climbing access at Farley is an ongoing concern and the crag has faced closures by landowners in the past. Landowners have requested that no online or printed guides containing climbing route descriptions or grades are published. As a result, climbing at Farley Ledges is a social affair for new climbers who must seek out experienced locals for climbing information.</p><br>
<p>Mount Fisht  is a peak located in the western Caucasus Mountains, in the Republic of Adygea, southwestern Russia.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>Fisht forms together with the peaks of Oshten and Pshekhu-Su the so-called Fisht-Oshten massif. The tops of the massif represent the first (advancing from west to east) in the Caucasus alpine-type peaks, that is, rising much higher than the upper boundary of the forest, having a wide belt of subalpine and alpine mountain meadows. In addition, Fisht is the westernmost peak of the Caucasus, which has glaciers on its slopes (Big and Small Fishtinsky glaciers) and considerable rock faults.</p><br>
<p>Structurally, Fisht is a blocky uplift composed of layers of reef-limestone. Powerful limestone strata contribute to the development of numerous and diverse karst forms (funnels, caves). Of the famous, on the slope of the mountain is a cave floating bird. Since 1994, the cave system "White Star" is being researched in Fisht, which is one of the deepest in Russia.</p><br>
<p>On the Great Fishtinsky Glacier is the classic climbing route of the category of complexity 1B. There are also climbing routes with a complexity of up to 6 A.</p><br>
<p>It is believed that the mountain was once an island in the ancient ocean of Tethys, which explains its coral structure.</p><br>
<p>From the slopes of Fisht, the river Pshekh begins, at the tops of Fish and Oshtan there is the source of the Belaya River, downstream of the receiving water of the Pshekhi River, and flowing into the Kuban. Shah also originates in Fisht, but flows into the Black Sea. From the western wall of the mountain flows the Fisch Falls, about 200 m high.</p><br>
<p>The mountain is mentioned in the video "Russian alphabet", shown during the opening of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.</p><br>

<p>Tomahawk Lake is a lake located in the town of Blooming Grove, New York, United States. It is a reservoir, created in 1929 by damming Cromline Creek, which converges with Otter Kill elsewhere in the town to form Moodna Creek, a tributary of the Hudson River. It is privately owned, and regulated by the homeowners&#39; association and access both as a water supply and recreational resource is restricted to its members. Two roads cross the lake, and public fishing access is limited to the lake up to 50 ft from the centerline of these roads. Limited parking is available on Hulsetown Road South of the junction with Cherry Hill Road. There is no bow-fishing in Tomahawk lake because it is illegal to discharge a bow from a NY road.</p><br>
<p>It is 150 acres (60 ha) in area. Recently a 30-acre (12 ha) section of the lake became infested with water chestnuts and had to be treated with herbicide. The state Department of Environmental Conservation found in 2006 that the dam had not been operated safely, lacked an ermegency action plan and had been repaired in the past without a required construction permit. The tree clearing and construction work required by DEC is now underway (summer 2009) and can be seen from Cherry Hill Rd.</p><br>
<p>The Neal Dow House, also known as Gen. Neal Dow House, is an historic house found at 714 Congress Street in Portland, Maine. It was built in 1829 for noted politician and prohibitionist Neal Dow , and was later designated a National Historic Landmark for that association. Dow was the author of the first prohibition law passed by the Maine legislature in 1851 . He was known as a tireless, internationally known activist for the temperance movement. Dows house was a center of activism in his lifetime, and is now the headquarters of the Maine chapter of the Womens Christian Temperance Union.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture and building history</h2><br>
<p>The Dow house is a large, 2-1/2 story, 17-room brick structure with late Federal styling. It is roughly rectangular in shape, with three distinct sections. A main block, 2-1/2 stories in height and three bays wide, anchors the corner lot on which it stands. A 2-1/2 story ell extends to the right from the rear of this block, and there is a single-story flat-roof section in the crook of the L created by the two taller sections. The main entrance is in the right side bay of the main block, and is sheltered by a late Victorian decorative hood.</p><br>
<p>The building was constructed in 1829, on the occasion of Neal Dows marriage to Maria Maynard. It was Dows home for 67 years, until his death at age 93 in 1897. The house was given by Dows son Fred to the local chapter of the Womens Christian Temperance Union, along with a large number of Dow&#39;s possessions and related artifacts. Although the chapter went through a period of low activity, attempts were begun in 2013 to revive it after the state legalized the sale of marijuana. The house is open to the public at no charge on weekdays or by appointment.</p><br>
<h2>Significance</h2><br>
<p>Neal Dow was born and raised in Portland to Quaker parents, and was an early advocate of temperance as well as a prominent local businessman. In 1829 he organized the Maine Temperance Union, and began to speak publicly in favor of the complete prohibition of alcohol. He won election as mayor of Portland in 1851, and immediately promoted the passage of a statewide prohibition law, which he was the author of. The law passed, bringing Dow a nationwide reputation, and labeling such laws in other states as "Maine laws". He traveled extensively throughout the country, speaking on behalf of the cause. During the American Civil War he served in the Union Army, rising to the rank of brigadier general. After the war he resumed his temperance activities, and also visited England, making common cause with temperance advocates there. In the 1880 presidential election he was a candidate for president on the Prohibition Party ticket, receiving about 10,000 votes. He remained active in the cause until his death. Biographer Frank Byrne credits Dow for paving the way, in terms of his principles, strategy, and tactics, for later temperance advocates.</p><br>
<p>Dow&#39;s house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and was designated a National Historic Landmark the following year.</p><br>
<p>Edwin Warner Park and Percy Warner Park, collectively known as Warner Parks, are two major public parks in Nashville, Tennessee. They are part of the park system managed by the Metropolitan Board of Parks and Recreation of Nashville and Davidson County. Percy Warner Park&#39;s front entrance is located at the end of Belle Meade Boulevard. The parks are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Warner Park Historic District. The district is primarily within Nashville along the southern edge of Davidson County, Tennessee, but it extends into Williamson County, Tennessee as well.</p><br>
<p>The two parks are adjacent to each other, separated by Old Hickory Boulevard, and are located approximately 9 mi from downtown Nashville. They are bounded on the northwest by Tennessee State Route 100, on the east and north by Chickering Road, and partially on the south by Old Hickory Blvd. and Vaughn Road. The two parks cover 2,684 acre, making the combined parks the second largest municipal park in the state (after Shelby Farms Park in Memphis which is 4,500 acres). The parks offer a variety of activities, including hiking trails, cross country courses, and an equestrian center.</p><br>
<p>Through funds raised by Friends of Warner Parks, the Warner Parks system added 448-acres in late 2014, expanding the park to more than 3,000 acres. Two properties were purchased for this expansion to enhance the park resources, including the 225-acre Burch Reserve with wooded hills and an old-growth forest previously owned by H. G. Hill Realty. The Burch Reserve is home to Nashville&#39;s largest cave in addition to small ponds, meadows and forestry. Ridges and hollows of the former H. G. Hill property are part of what is considered the largest old growth forest in an urban area east of the Mississippi.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The parks were opened in 1927, and are on land donated by Percie Warner Lea and her husband, Luke. The parks were named for her father, Percy, a member of the old Nashville Board of Park Commissioners and former head of the city&#39;s streetcar lines and electric utility, and her uncle Edwin, who was also a park commissioner. The commission developed the parks into their present layout through 1930. A large, ceremonial-style entrance to Percy Warner Park, reminiscent of a European allee, along with many other, smaller native Tennessee limestone structures in and adjacent to the parks, were constructed by the Works Progress Administration during the New Deal era shortly afterwards.</p><br>
<p>The parks were named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The listing was for a 2,664 acre historic district. When listed, the district included five contributing buildings, 36 contributing structures, and 14 contributing sites. Also included were 10 non-contributing buildings, eight non-contributing structures, and five non-contributing sites.</p><br>
<p>The district has dates of significance in 1927, 1930, and 1941. Recently there was a significant addition of land across Tennessee State Route 100 from the rest of the park, purchased from the H. G. Hill family and consisting predominately of old-growth virgin forest, in 2010. The fund raising effort for this purpose was headed by local attorney Warner Bass, grandson and great-nephew of park namesakes Edwin and Percy Warner, respectively, and coordinated through the parks&#39; charitable support group, Friends of Warner Parks.</p><br>
<p>The Warner Park Historic District was further designated a Nashville landmark in 1998.</p><br>
<h2>Activities</h2><br>
<p>The parks offer a variety of trails for running and biking. Cars can drive through the park as well. There are also equestrian trails, athletic fields, and a golf course. Percy Warner Park is characterized by a group of steps built into the mountain located at the entrance to the park. Walkers can traverse these steps to reach the base of many hiking and biking trails.</p><br>
<p>The parks are home to a steeplechase course that hosts the Iroquois Steeplechase, run annually each May since 1941 (with one year off for World War II) and a fixture on the National Steeplechase Association circuit. It is the only graded horse race, steeplechase or flat, that is currently run in the state. It is also home to the state championship in cross-country.</p><br>
<p>The parks are also home to two golf courses, Harpeth Hills Golf Course and Percy Warner Golf Course, the Warner Park Nature Center, the Rock and Road Relay, Marathon, and 5K. and the Harpeth Hills Flying Monkey Marathon.</p><br>
<p>Kangra Valley is situated in the Western Himalayas. Administratively, it predominantly lies in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India. It is a popular tourist destination, with the peak season around March and April. The Kangri dialect is spoken there.</p><br>

<h2>1905 earthquake</h2><br>
<p>The valley witnessed a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake at 6:19 am on 4 April 1905, as a result of which about 19,800 people were killed and thousands were injured in the Kangra area. Most buildings in towns of Kangra, Mcleodganj and Dharamshala were destroyed.</p><br>
<p>The Green Grotto Caves are show caves and a prominent tourist attraction on the north coast of Jamaica. Named for the green algae that cover its walls, the structure of the cave is strikingly different from inland systems; the cave is a Flank Margin Cave  with two well-defined levels apparently indicating two periods with differing sea-levels. The innermost cavern contains a crystal-clear underground lake.</p><br>
<p>In addition to the publicly accessible sections of the cave there is also a section of "wild caves" with relatively undisturbed ecology. Hydrologically, the cave system is connected with the adjacent coastal waters.</p><br>

<p>At various times they have been known as the Runaway Bay Caves, Hopewell Caves, Cave Hall Caves, Discovery Bay Caves, Dry Harbour Caves, Rum Caves and Dairy Caves.</p><br>
<p>The first know inhabitants of the caves were Arawak Indians who left pottery fragments and adzes. When Jamaica was a British Colony the caves were used as a hideaway by the Spanish who were being driven out by the British settlers. The caves were also known to have been used by escaped slaves, hence the name Runaway Caves. Between the two world wars they were used by smugglers running arms to Cuba, while in the later years of the Second World War the Government of Jamaica used the entrance of the cave as a storeroom for rum in barrels.</p><br>
<h2>Natural history</h2><br>
<p>The caves are home to nine of Jamaica&#39;s 21 species of bat including the Big-Eared Bat, the Mustache Bat, and the Jamaican Fruit-Eating Bat. Numbers are quite high with most of the available roosting space used. Guano is present in large amounts but few of the usual guano dwelling inverts have been recorded; the invasive American Roach is found.</p><br>
<p>The brackish water in the lower levels is full of marine life including small barnacles and various unidentified small swimming creatures.</p><br>
<h2>Cultural references</h2><br>
<p>The filming of the 1973 James Bond film Live and Let Die, used the caves for villain Doctor Kananga&#39;s underground base beneath a cemetery on the fictional island of San Monique. It is most memorable for being the location where Bond (played for the first time by Roger Moore) kills Kananga (played by Yaphet Kotto) by forcing him to swallow a bullet of compressed air, causing him to float up to the ceiling like a balloon and explode.</p><br>
<p>Ian Fleming&#39;s original novel had the villain using the real-life Jamaican caves as part of his SMERSH-funding smuggling operation.</p><br>
<p>Windsor Great Cave is a 3,000 m long cave in Trelawny Parish on the north coast of Jamaica. The land external to the main entrance is owned by the WWF , and access is often denied by the</p><br>
<p>Windsor Research Centre who act as their proxy.</p><br>
<h2>Natural history</h2><br>
<p>The caves contain a major bat roost that hosts 12 or so species including Mormoops blainvillii, Pteronotus parnellii, Glossophaga soricina, Artibeus jamaicensis and Ariteus flavescens. Bat guano has been harvested from the caves for many years and this continues.</p><br>
<p>Invertebrates include springtails of the species Troglopedetes jamaicanus, fungal gnats, troglobitic spiders (Nesticidae), larval Neodytomyia farri and the invasive roach Periplaneta americana.</p><br>
<p>Stygobites include cave-adapted crabs of the species Sesarma verleyi, but note that the misnamed Sesarma windsor is not found here.</p><br>
<h2>Palaeoclimatic records</h2><br>
<p>In the main bat roost there is a mound of guano over two metres high, directly under a particularly good roosting-spot. The deeper strata of this deposit may record the climate of the island for periods that could extend back for thousands of years.</p><br>
<p>Blake Peak  is a mountain located in Essex County, New York. The mountain is named after Mills Blake , Verplanck Colvin’s chief assistant during the Adirondack Survey.</p><br>

<p>Blake Peak was formerly thought to have an elevation of at least 4,000 ft, so it was included on the list of 46 Adirondack High Peaks. More recent surveys show Blake and three other peaks fell slightly short, but they remain on the list.</p><br>
<p>Lake Kanawauke is a primarily man-made lake in Harriman State Park. The name is Onondaga in origin, and means "place of much water". There are three parts to the lake, lower, middle and upper; the total area is 186 acre. It is located in the Town of Tuxedo in Orange County and the Town of Haverstraw in Rockland County.</p><br>

<p>Lower Kanawauke was built in 1915 by damming Stony Brook. It was used by the Boy Scouts for camping; by 1930 there were fourteen camps on the lake.</p><br>
<p>Middle Kanawauke was built in 1916 by damming Stillwater Creek. It was used by the Brooklyn Boy Scouts, who erected six camps and built the 35 mi White Bar trail system centered on the lake.</p><br>
<p>Upper Kanawauke is the only natural lake of the three. In the mid-nineteenth century there was a small settlement on the lake shore. Seven Boy Scout camps were built around the lake starting in 1917, one of which became a Girl Scout camp, Camp Quid Nunc (Latin for "What now").</p><br>
<p>Kfar Baram , is the site of an ancient Jewish village. It is situated near to the site of Kafr Bir&#39;im or Kafar Berem, a medieval Maronite Christian village. Today, it is located in Northern Israel, 3 kilometers from the Lebanese border.</p><br>
<h2>Etymology</h2><br>
<p>The name is often assumed to mean "Son of the People," incorporating the Aramaic word bar בר, meaning "son" and the Hebrew word am עם meaning "people". However, if like at Shfar&#39;am, both elements are Hebrew, the name could derive from a literary Hebrew word בר indicating cleanliness, purity, pristineness and wholesomeness - "The wholesome people" or "wholesomeness of the people".</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Bar&#39;am was established in ancient times as a Jewish village. At an unknown point between the 7th and the 13th century, Jews abandoned the village. After a period of Muslim inhabitation, by the 19th century the village was entirely Christian, comprising Maronites and Melkites. A church on the site, the Maronite church, is maintained and is in regular use.</p><br>
<p>For many centuries, the place was a place of Jewish pilgrimage. It was said in the 12th century to contain the tombs of Barak, the prophet Obadiah and Queen Esther. The Jews of Safed would assemble around these shrines each year on Purim to "eat, drink and rejoice," and the Megillat Esther (Scroll of Esther) was read at her grave. A few people were reported to still visit the spot in 1868.</p><br>
<p>However, the Persian city of Hamadan (ancient Ecbatana) contains a more prominent monument which is also said to be the tomb of Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai. According to Jewish tradition, Pinchas ben Yair (2nd-century CE) was buried in Kfar Bar&#39;am.</p><br>
<p>The village was badly damaged in the Galilee earthquake of 1837. The local church and a row of columns and other standing remains of the ancient synagogue were thrown to the ground.</p><br>
<p>The nearby village of Kafr Birim was captured October 31, 1948 by the Israel Defense Forces during operation Hiram and the villagers forced to leave. In 1949, due to frequent cross-border infiltration, they were barred from returning to the border zone. On June 16, 1949, Kibbutz Baram was founded nearby by demobilized Palmach soldiers.</p><br>
<h2>Archaeology</h2><br>
<p>The Kfar Bar&#39;am synagogue is preserved up to the second story and has been restored. The architecture is similar to that of other synagogues in the Galilee built in the Talmudic period. In 1522, Rabbi Moses Basula wrote that the synagogue belonged to Simeon bar Yochai, who survived the Second Jewish War in 132-135 CE (the Bar-Kochba revolt). Archaeologists, however, have concluded that the building was built at least a century later. According to another tradition, the synagogue was built in honor of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, and bore his name. Israeli archaeologist Lipa Sukenik (1889–1953), who was instrumental in establishing the Department of Archaeology at the Hebrew University, excavated a relief in one of the synagogues in 1928, and dated the Bar’am synagogue to the 3rd century CE.</p><br>
<p>The synagogue is made of basalt stone, standard for most buildings in the area. The six-column portico is unusual. The front entrance of the synagogue has three doorways that face Jerusalem. In front of the entrance are some of the (originally eight) columns with Attic bases which supported a porch. There is an inscription under the right window on the facade, which reads: "Banahu Elazar bar Yodan", which means "Elazar bar Yodan built it". Elazar bar Yodan is a Jewish Aramaic name. The interior of the synagogue was divided by rows of columns into three aisles and an ambulatory.</p><br>
<p>An unusual feature in an ancient synagogue is the presence of three-dimensional sculpture, a pair of stone lions. A similar pair of three-dimensional lions was found at Chorazin. A carved frieze features a winged victory and images of animals and, possibly, human figures.</p><br>
<p>There was a second, smaller synagogue, but little of it was found. A lintel from this smaller synagogue is at the Louvre. The Hebrew inscription on the lintel reads, "Peace be upon the place, and on all the places of Israel."</p><br>
<p>In 1901, publication of photos of the ancient synagogue led the Jewish Hospital of Philadelphia, (now the Albert Einstein Medical Center,) to erect a synagogue, the Henry S. Frank Memorial Synagogue, inspired by Baram and other ancient Israeli synagogues. The hospitals synagogue replicated the round arch of the door of the standing ruin and the lintel from the smaller synagogue that is now in the Louvre.</p><br>
<p>The Dôme du Goûter  is a mountain in the Mont Blanc massif. It is a shoulder of Mont Blanc, whose summit lies two kilometres to the south-east. The Dôme is traversed on ascents of Mont Blanc via the Bosses route.</p><br>
<p>The summit of the Dôme is marked as lying entirely within France on the French Institut Géographique National (IGN) map, although on Italian Istituto Geografico Militare (IGM) map the summit appears to lie on the frontier between France and Italy.</p><br>
<h2>Refuge du Gouter</h2><br>
<p>In 2014, the Refuge du Gouter opened, a mountain hut noted for its modern style. From the hut the summit of the Dome du Gouter is about two hours away by foot. The hut is located above the Aiguille du Gouter cliff and is constructed of wood and steel in a roughly egg shape. The older shelter was a more basic metal shed that sat on the ice, whereas the new building has supports drilled into the rock.</p><br>
<p>Johnson County, Texas, has had many courthouses since it was formed.</p><br>
<h2>Historical courthouses of Johnson County</h2><br>
<p>The original courthouse was at Wardville. It is still in existence today at a park on the banks of Lake Pat Cleburne, though it suffered damage at the hands of arsonists in 2007. In 1856, the county seat was moved to Buchanan and a new courthouse was built, which survived until at least the mid-1960s. A two-story framed courthouse was planned but never constructed. When part of Johnson County was consolidated into Hood County the county seat was moved again, to "Camp Henderson" which was renamed Cleburne. The first building used was off the square proper of the town, at 2 North Caddo. A two-story brick courthouse was completed on October 26, 1879. In 1882, this one was razed and a new brick building was built which included a bell tower. Though it was brick, it shared styling with neighboring Hill County&#39;s courthouse. This was destroyed by fire on April 15, 1912.</p><br>
<h2>Current courthouse</h2><br>
<p>The current Prairie style structure was completed on November 28, 1913 and was renovated in 2006.</p><br>
<p>The Priest&#39;s House is a National Trust-owned property in Muchelney, in the English county of Somerset. It has been designated as a grade II listed building. The house was built in the early 14th century by the nearby Muchelney Abbey to house the parish priest.</p><br>
<p>Over the centuries the house deteriorated and was adapted for use as a school. In the late 19th century it rented as storage by a farmer. In the early 20th century the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings campaigned for its restoration and it was then taken over by the National Trust. The thatched stone building is rented to a tenant and has limited public access.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Priest&#39;s House was built by the nearby Muchelney Abbey around 1308 for the parish priest. The vicarage was valued at £10 per annum in 1535. The building was said to be "ruinous" in 1608. It was used by the vicar or curate until around 1840, when the house was used as a cellar and later as a school.</p><br>
<p>In the late 19th century it was rented by a farmer for storage. Because of its poor condition it was recommended for demolition in both 1896 and 1901. The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings organised a public appeal to raise money for repairs to which Jane Morris, Thomas Hardy and George Bernard Shaw contributed. As the funding for the restoration was no longer an issue the building was acquired, in 1911,</p><br>
<p>In the 1990s and 2000s the building underwent further structural repairs, including the replacement of the timber structure supporting the roof and was rethatched with grant aid from English Heritage. Today the National Trust rent it to a tenant who provides limited access to the public.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The two-storey thatched hall house is made of local stone with hamstone dressings. Externally the house measures 51 ft by 22 ft wide. It has four bays along the south front which incorporates original Gothic doorway and tracery windows. Inside is a 15th-century fireplace.</p><br>
<p>The original hall went from floor to roof, however in the 16th century a ceiling was added dividing it into two floors. This also involved changes to the original windows. The hall has a cruck roof with a saddle apex typical of the 14th century.</p><br>
<p>The Treasurers House is a National Trust-owned property in Martock, in the English county of Somerset. It has been designated as a grade I listed building. Apart from the Bishops Palace, Wells it is the oldest house in the county.</p><br>
<p>The original 13th-century buildings have been added to several times, including a 15th-century great hall which has an arch-braced-collar truss roof. Several of the rooms have wall paintings which have been uncovered and restored since the National Trust were given the building in 1970. The house belonged to the Bishop of Bath and Wells and at one time was used to store the Great Seal of the Realm when John Langton was the chancellor of England.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Treasurers House is a medieval priests house built from Hamstone during the 13th century. The solar block, which was built around 1250 survives as the oldest part of the building, making it the second oldest inhabited house in Somerset. It is mentioned as the parsonage attached to the village Church of All Saints. In 1227 it was acquired by Hugh of Wells the treasurer of Wells Cathedral who became the rector and patron of the church. The great hall was added in 1293. In 1297 John Langton, who was a chancellor of England and Bishop of Chichester, received the Great Seal of the Realm which was stored at the "court at Martock". The kitchen was added in the 15th century.</p><br>
<p>The Bishop of Bath owned the building, which was known as Martock Priory, until 1849 when it was transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. It was then privately owned and a small wing added. In 1943 it was bought by Harold St George Gray, the librarian-curator of the Museum for the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society to preserve it. His wife bequeathed it to the National Trust in 1970.</p><br>
<p>In 1987 it was designated as a Grade I listed building.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The building has undergone various extensions and alterations since it was built. The building has a T shaped plan with the west projecting wing being a hall added in the late 13th century. The roof was covered with slate from local quarries until it was thatched in the mid 19th century. The current clay tiles were used in the early 20th century.</p><br>
<p>The kitchen block was added in the late 15th century or early 16th century and has no direct connection with the rest of the house. It has a plate tracery window with a Trefoil cusping surrounded by wall paintings. The solar separated from the hall by a screens passage.</p><br>
<p>The walls of one of the private chambers on the upper floor were covered with 16th century limewash which was removed in 1995, to expose a 13th-century wall painting with a depiction of Jesus on the cross and two other figures. The crucifixion scene with rosettes and vine leaf decoration was uncovered in the 1990s.</p><br>
<p>The Rankin Ranch is a historic ranch off Montana Highway 284, north of Townsend in rural Broadwater County, Montana. A National Historic Landmark, it was a longtime summer residence of Jeannette Rankin , whose 1916 election to the United States House of Representatives made her the first woman elected to the House. Her legacy includes a penchant for pacifism, women&#39;s rights, and social reform. She served another term from 1941-1943 when she was the only member of the House to oppose the declaration of war against Japan in 1941. A small portion of the ranch was designated a National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Rankin Ranch is located on the southwestern flank of the Big Belt Mountains, between Montana Highway 284 and Helena National Forest. The ranch consists of about 14,000 acre of land, most of which is open prairie. The ranch complex is located on Avalanche Gulch Road, a county road providing access to the national forest, just southwest of the national forest boundary, and is screened by a number of trees. The main house is a modest single-story clapboarded frame structure. The front facade, facing roughly west, is set behind a recessed porch supported by fieldstone posts. The interior, of the house, and the accompanying ranch outbuildings, are not architecturally distinguished.</p><br>
<p>The ranch house is believed to have been built in 1923 by Dan Flouree, the same year the initial 2,000 acre parcel of the ranch was purchased by Wellington Rankin, brother of Jeanette Rankin. This ranch became the regular summer home for Jeanette from then until 1956. Of all of the places she lived, it is the place where she spent the most of her time during the height of her political influence. Elected in 1916 to the United States House of Representatives, she was the first woman elected to Congress. She was a strong pacificist, opposing American entry into both World War I and World War II; in 1941, she was the only member of Congress to oppose the war declaration after the December Attack on Pearl Harbor. She was a supporter of socially progressive legislation, working to secure women&#39;s suffrage.</p><br>
<p>An area of 90 acre surrounding the homestead was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976, in recognition of Rankin&#39;s historic role.</p><br>
<p>Travelers Rest was a stopping point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, located about one mile south of Lolo, Montana. The expedition stopped from September 9 to September 11, 1805, before crossing the Bitterroot Mountains, and again on the return trip from June 30 to July 3, 1806. Travelers Rest is at the eastern end of the Lolo Trail. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. The boundaries were subsequently revised, and mostly lie within the 51 acre Travelers Rest State Park, which is operated by the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. Significant archeological findings made in 2002, including latrine sites with traces of mercury and fire hearths, make this the only site on the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail that has yielded physical proof of the explorers presence. Records made by Lewis and Clark often spell "Travelers" as "Travellers".</p><br>
<p>At the time of landmark designation in 1960, the exact location of the expedition&#39;s campsite was unknown. Boundaries were formalized on December 12, 1983. Subsequent investigations revealed that errors had been made in setting the boundaries of the landmark. Detailed historical and scientific investigations resulted in a 55-page request for boundary corrections, submitted on May 10, 2004, and approved on March 21, 2006. A new road and bridge were built in 2006.</p><br>
<p>After departing here in 1806, Lewis&#39; part of the expedition traveled to what is now the Alice Creek Historic District.</p><br>
<p>Diamond Lake is a natural body of water in the southern part of the USA state of Oregon. It lies near the junction of Oregon Route 138 and Oregon Route 230 in the Umpqua National Forest in Douglas County. It is located between Mount Bailey to the west and Mount Thielsen to the east; it is just north of Crater Lake National Park.</p><br>
<p>The outlet of the lake is at its north end. From there, water flows via Lake Creek into the North Umpqua River and ultimately to the Pacific Ocean.</p><br>
<p>Diamond Lake was named for John Diamond, for whom Diamond Peak is also named. He saw the lake in 1852 while on the summit of Diamond Peak. Diamond was a pioneer settler of Coburg, Oregon, and part of a party opening a road between the Middle Fork Willamette River and Idaho as an immigration route.</p><br>
<p>An adjacent post office named Diamond Lake, Oregon, was established in 1925 and ran until 1956, when it was changed to a summer-only office.</p><br>
<h2>Fish</h2><br>
<p>Although rainbow trout are not native to Diamond Lake because the lake lacks the required spawning habitat, large populations of aquatic insects make it ideal for fish. However, in 1992 a non-native species, tui chub, was detected in the lake. These fish, illegally introduced to the lake, quickly multiplied and negatively affected the sport fishery. The water became murky, the insect population dropped dramatically, and the trout population declined.</p><br>
<p>To eliminate the unwanted fish, the ODFW poisoned Diamond Lake with rotenone in 2006. This killed 95 million tui chub, and the lake became free of them. By 2007 dramatic improvements were noted in water clarity, insect populations, and the trout catch. The ODFW has captured golden shiners, another invasive species of bait fish illegally introduced to the lake. Although shiners are less successful than tui chubs at multiplying in Diamond Lake, the ODFW works to remove them and to discourage more from being added.</p><br>
<p>In January 2016, Oregon revealed their plan to release up to 25,000 fish-eating tiger trout into the lake after the appearance of a single tui chub in an effort to prevent it from, once again, harming the lake. The tui chub found in October was 4 years old which means that it was not there for the 2006 elimination. Scientist are unsure of the origins of the single tui chub.</p><br>
<h2>Recreation</h2><br>
<p>Anglers often fish by boat near Silent Creek on the south and in deep water on the north. There are five boat ramps around the lake, all of which have paved access. The speed limit on the lake is 10 mph. Bank fishing is productive at points along the lake trails, near Diamond Lake Resort, near Lake Creek, and near the United States Forest Service campgrounds. The lake is generally open for fishing from late April through late October.</p><br>
<p>Trails connect Diamond Lake to the summits of Mount Bailey and Mount Thielsen, and the Pacific Crest Trail and Crater Lake are also nearby. One of the lake trails is a paved bike path 11 mi long. Wildlife viewing and birdwatching in the area are common activities. The Joseph H. Stewart State Recreation Area is the closest state park to Diamond Lake.</p><br>
<p>The Forest Service operates four campgrounds near Diamond Lake. They are Diamond Lake Campground, with 240 campsites along the east side of the lake; Broken Arrow Campground, with 148 sites at the lake&#39;s south end; Thielsen View Campground, with 58 sites along the west shore, and the South Shore Area, with five sites. Campground features include picnic tables, restrooms, showers, and garbage bins; some have hookups for recreational vehicles. The South Shore Picnic Area has a playground, volleyball court, horseshoe pits, and a swimming beach, in addition to picnic accommodations.</p><br>
<p>Swimming, horseback riding, and hunting are popular at Diamond Lake in summer and fall. Winter sports include snowmobiling, Nordic and Alpine skiing, inner tubing and sled dog racing. Diamond Lake Resort on the east side of the lake offers lodging, restaurants, stores, boat rentals, horse rentals, and other services.</p><br>

<p>The Moberly Lake has always been a revered site for the Danezaa people. They called it the Lake you can depend on, an allusion to the bounty of the lake, where they could always find food.</p><br>

<p>Other Danezaa regarded the lake as a place of mystique. For them, it was the Lake with a hole through it or the lake with no bottom. According to their lore, the lake was the dwelling place of an ancient creature that came to the surface after long intervals below the water.</p><br>
<p>Ajusco is a 3,930 m lava dome volcano located just south of Mexico City, Mexico, in the Tlalpan borough of the city. It is the highest point in the city.</p><br>
<h2>Etymology</h2><br>
<p>Ajusco is a Náhuatl word variously translated as "source of waters" or "watered grove", and the Lerma River and Balsas River draw some of their source waters from this area. Also, the flow from all of the remaining strong springs in the area adjacent to the peak are captured to augment Mexico City&#39;s water supply.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>Ajusco is a lava-dome complex of Pliocene-Pleistocene age, surrounded by block-and-ash flow deposits. Ajusco is part of the mountain chain of volcanic origin known as Sierra del Ajusco-Chichinauhtzin, among which Xitle (3,128 m), Tláloc (3,690 m), Pelado (3,620 m), Cuautzin (3,510 m) and Chichinautzin (3,470 m) stand out. This range is part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt which crosses central Mexico and contains the country&#39;s highest peaks.</p><br>
<h2>Ecology</h2><br>
<p>Parts of this range account for about half of the area of the Mexican Federal District, the rest of which is occupied by Mexico City.</p><br>
<p>The area is important for conservation of local ecosystems. In its oak, pine and fir forests there are unique endemic species like the teporingo rabbit and the volcano mouse.</p><br>

<p>The area around the peak is a popular destination for residents of Mexico City and tourists, with activities such mountain biking, horseback riding, motorcycling, hiking and climbing. The area is one of the few around Mexico City where it may snow in the winter. This mountain offers stunning views, where all of the Valley of Mexico can be seen (weather and pollution permitting), including the city and its skyscrapers, Popocatepetl, Iztaccihuatl and Nevado de Toluca volcanoes, and parts of the Valley of Cuernavaca.</p><br>
<p>The Ajusco area is also home to Six Flags México (the largest amusement park in Latin America), the TV Azteca television network, the National Pedagogic University, the UNAM radio transmission center, the Fondo de Cultura Económica and El Colegio de México.</p><br>
<p>Atop the volcano is a pre-Hispanic site where artifacts have been discovered.</p><br>
<p>The Penn Alto Building is a landmark building located in downtown Altoona, Pennsylvania, United States. The building is nine stories high and has a partial tenth floor penthouse. The name of the building remains the same, even though its usage has changed over time. The name changed from the Penn Alto Hotel to Penn Alto Apartments when it changed from strictly being a hotel to a residential hotel, which rents both apartments and hotel rooms. The current name is City Hall Commons, deriving its name from its proximity to City Hall, which is just across the street.</p><br>
<p>The building was designed by the H.L. Stevens & Company and constructed in 1921 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. It is in the Downtown Altoona Historic District. Official measurements of the building conflict with each other. One measurement is as conservative as 98 ft, while another lists it as 115 ft. These variations may be due to the slight incline that the Penn Alto was built on.</p><br>
<p>The Staten Island Bluebelt , is a very large scale system of stormwater best management practices  that includes structural and nonstructural stormwater management control measures taken to mitigate changes to both quantity and quality of runoff caused through changes to land use.</p><br>
<p>The Bluebelt is an award-winning and unique project that has been under active construction on Staten Island, New York, since the early 1990s.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Bluebelt program was initiated in the late 1980s by New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of City Planning, based on a suggestion made several decades earlier by Ian McHarg, a landscape architect. Acquisition of land began in 1991 for the project, one of the Northeast United States’ most ambitious stormwater management efforts. The overall goal is to provide the necessary stormwater drainage infrastructure for a 12,000 acre region on the southern end of the island while at the same time preserving the last great stand of freshwater wetlands in New York City. The bluebelt uses a series of carefully placed BMPs at the storm sewer/wetland interface to reduce flooding and improve water quality. Creation of a self-regulating ecosystem that is native to the Staten Island region is of primary importance to the program.</p><br>
<p>BMPs used in the bluebelt include stormwater wetlands, stream restoration, outlet stilling basins, and sand filters. Ninety-two stormwater wetlands are planned for the project, about half of which have been constructed to date (2008). In order to integrate the wetlands into the natural ecology, the construction process is advised by restoration specialists since general contractors are typically not trained in proper plant selection and installation. The planting design focuses on quick establishment of the preferred successional communities that will complement the surrounding landscape, before invasive species take over the site.</p><br>
<p>The performance of the Bluebelt during the storms that battered Staten Island in the early 21st century &ndash; including Hurricane Sandy &ndash; has been described as "brilliant".</p><br>
<p>The Houston County Courthouse and Jail, located at 304 Marshall Street South in Caledonia, Houston County in the USA state of Minnesota, consists of a Romanesque stone courthouse featuring a prominent center tower, built in 1883 and an Italianate stone jail and sheriff residence built in 1875. Both were designed by C. G. Maybury & Son of Winona.</p><br>
<p>In the late nineteenth century there was considerable disagreement about the location of the Houston County seat. In 1874, Caledonia was named and construction soon began on the jail and sheriff&#39;s residence. By 1882 planning began on the courthouse. Construction was by Noonan and Stellwager at a cost of $60,000, and the building was completed in 1885. Taxpayers criticized the expense of ornamental carpentry and five chandeliers, while county taxes doubled. The current building includes additions built in 1965 and 1977.</p><br>
<p>In 2010, construction began on a new justice center next to the old courthouse; it will replace the old jail.</p><br>
<p>The Jackson County Courthouse, located at 413 4th Street in the city of Jackson, Jackson County in the USA state of Minnesota consists of a Bedford limestone Beaux Arts courthouse featuring a high, segmented dome adorned with a cast statue of Lady Justice, columns supporting a gable overhang, a shield pediment, and symmetrical pavilions.</p><br>
<p>The building was built by Charles Skooglun of Saint Paul at a cost $117,435 in 1908-1909. The imposing structure is topped by a two-plus-story dome with stained glass windows. This sits over an octagonal atrium with terrazzo floors, marbled plaster walls, and a second-floor courtroom painted by immigrants with extensive murals; they depict scenes such as a frontier cabin, a railroad, Romans engaged in engineering and construction, and three women (justice, liberty, and equality) guarding a judge&#39;s bench.</p><br>
<p>Hazaran  is the name of a massif of the Central Iranian Plateau, Kerman Province, Iran, an eastern outlier of the Zagros Mountains. With an elevation of 4500 metres, it is the highest peak in Kerman Province. The jebal Barez chain is a continuation to the south-east.</p><br>

<p>Made chiefly of Eocene andesite and pyroclastic rocks, Mount Hazar or Hazaran is situated in a central Iranian range, Sahand-Bazman volcanic range or belt, a mountain range which was formed mainly during Eocene volcanism and that stretches approximately from Sahand Volcano in the north-west of Iran to Bazman Volcano in the south-east of Iran.</p><br>

<p>The Martin County Courthouse is located at 201 Lake Avenue Fairmont, Martin County in the USA state of Minnesota. It is a Beaux Arts building featuring a high copper dome with four clock faces. The first floor was made out of Michigan sandstone. The second and third stories are built of Bedford limestone. The arched entrance is flanked by polished double Corinthian order columns and topped by a pediment. The building was designed by Charles E. Bell and built by J. B. Nelson for $125,000 during 1906-1907. Interior murals of figures representing Peace, War, Inspiration, Genius, Sentence, and The Execution were painted by Franz E. Rohrbeck of Milwaukee. Interior finishing includes marble countertops, metalwork, and stained glass.</p><br>
<p>The building is connected to the brick and concrete Martin County Security Building by skyway on second level, and by tunnel below ground, at basement level. The security building provides space for police and detention, and was designed by 1972.</p><br>
<p>The building is 79 ft by 116 ft and rises 50 ft to the top of the roof, then 58 ft to the top of the dome.</p><br>
<p>The building is located on Lake Avenue at Second Street, in the western side of the city of Fairmont, on a hill overlooking Lake Sisseton.</p><br>
<p>Historic Strawberry Mansion is a summer home originally named Summerville by Judge William Lewis who had it built sometime between 1783 and 1789. It is located in East Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.</p><br>
<p>During the period from 1846 to 1867, when farmers renting the mansion served strawberries and cream to the public, Strawberry Mansion received its current name. The house was restored between 1927 and 1931 by a nonprofit called The Committee of 1926 for use as a historic house museum and place of hospitality.</p><br>
<h2>William Lewis</h2><br>
<p>William Lewis was born in 1751 in Edgmont, Pennsylvania to a Quaker family of Welsh ancestry. As a lawyer during revolutionary times, he consistently defended other Quakers against charges of treason after they refused to fight in battle or pay taxes. In doing so, he helped create the foundations of Conscientious Objection.</p><br>
<p>Lewis was appointed to federal judicial positions by George Washington and also advised Alexander Hamilton on the first national bank. His most important achievement was his role in the drafting and passage of An Act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery in 1780. This legislation was the first legal action towards the abolition of slavery in the United States.</p><br>
<p>Lewis purchased land in what is now Fairmount Park, including some existing buildings, and proceeded to built the mansion—which he called Summerville—sometime between 1783 and 1789. Lewis lived there until his death in 1819 at the age of 68.</p><br>
<h2>Joseph Hemphill</h2><br>
<p>Joseph Hemphill was born in 1770 in Chester County, now Delaware County. He purchased Strawberry Mansion in 1821, two years after Lewis&#39;s death. His family was responsible for adding the Greek Revival wings to the Federal style structure erected by Lewis, ca. 1828. He served as a member of the House of Representatives, in addition to being a prominent lawyer and judge. Hemphill is, perhaps, more well known among antique collectors for his role in the limited manufacture of Hemphill and Tucker porcelain. His collaborative effort with Philadelphia porcelain maker William Ellis Tucker lasted only 6 years, from 1832 to 1838.</p><br>
<h2>Property of Fairmount Park</h2><br>
<p>In 1867 Strawberry Mansion was sold to the city by a landowner who had been in possession of it since Judge Hemphills death in 1842. The purchase of the mansion, along with a great deal of the surrounding land, was part of an effort to protect the source of the citys drinking water, the Schuylkill River. The area was named East Fairmount Park, under the supervision of the Fairmount Park Commission.</p><br>
<h2>Renovations</h2><br>
<p>In 1926, several womens clubs combined efforts with Mayor W. Freeland Kendrick to create a Sesquicentennial Exposition in South Philadelphia in honor of the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Several women from the event did not want to disband, and instead sought an area to move many of the antique furniture collections to another location. Under the supervision of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Fairmount Park Commission, the new Committee of 1926 renovated Strawberry Mansion to be used as a museum and place of hospitality. Funds for the renovation were donated by Joseph Horn, of Horn and Hardarts automats. Horn grew up in the Philadelphia area and was fond of playing in the park as a child. Decor and furnishings were the charge of various women&#39;s societies throughout the city who filled the rooms with exceptional period furnishings. The house officially reopened in 1931 with Mrs. J. Willis Martin (Elizabeth Price) as the first president of the Committee of 1926. Today the Committee of 1926 continues to preserve the historic house museum and the principles of hospitality on which it was founded.</p><br>
<p>Strawberry Mansion was renovated again in the early 21st century.</p><br>

<p>The mountain is part of the Colvin Range.</p><br>
<p>Nippletop is flanked to the northeast by Dial Mountain.</p><br>
<p>To the east, it faces Dix Mountain across Hunters Pass, and to the west it faces Mount Colvin across Elk Pass.</p><br>
<p>The west side of Nippletop drains into the West Inlet of Elk Lake, thence into The Branch of the Schroon River, the Hudson River, and into New York Bay.</p><br>
<p>The south and east sides of Nippletop drain into the East Inlet of Elk Lake.</p><br>
<p>The northeast side of Nippletop drains into the headwaters of the North Fork of the Boquet River, thence into Lake Champlain, which drains into Canada&#39;s Richelieu River, the Saint Lawrence River, and into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.</p><br>

<p>The Rice County Courthouse, located at 218 3rd Street NW in Faribault, Rice County, in the USA state of Minnesota, is an Art Deco building constructed of natural-face Faribault stone horizontally banded at intervals with sawed-faced stone. Nairne W. Fisher of St. Cloud was the architect for the courthouse, and is also credited with designing the The main rotunda has metal fixtures and Art Deco glass. Polished black and gray Tennessee marble is used extensively in the walls, floors, and stairs, with a terrazzo map of Rice County centered on the floor. The 16 ft courtroom on the third floor was finished with fine-grained walnut walls with matching custom-built furnishings. The building was built in 1934 at a cost of $200,000.</p><br>
<p>A guidebook to Minnesota architecture described the courthouse building as "A near-perfect mixture of the classical and the Zigzag Moderne. Relief sculpture on the sides of the building along 4th and 3rd Streets extols civic virtue, industry and farming. Within, a central rotunda is approached by a Zigzag Moderne staircase; Moderne metal and glass light fixtures abound."</p><br>
<p>The brick jail building, located at 128 3rd Street NW in Faribault, was constructed in 1910 in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, and was designed by Albert Schippel of Mankato, Minnesota.</p><br>
<p>The Senator Walter Lowrie Shaw House is a historic home located in downtown Butler, Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is known in the area for being the home of Butlers only United States Senator, Walter Lowrie. The structure was built in 1828, and is a 2 1/2-story, brick dwelling on a cut stone foundation. It has a slate covered gable roof. The front section measures 48 feet by 38 feet and has a two-story, shed roofed rear wing. A front porch was added about 1870-1880. It is considered the last of its kind in the city of Butler. The house is situated behind the Butler County Courthouse, houses the Butler County Historical Societys office, and is maintained as a museum by the Society.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.</p><br>
<p>The Hotel Kirkwood, also known as the Kirkwood Civic Center Hotel, is a historic building located in downtown Des Moines, Iowa, United States. The building was designed by the Chicago architectural firm of H.L. Stevens & Company and built in 1930. With its completion it became the largest hotel along Fourth Street between Walnut Street and Court Avenue, along Des Moines "Hotel Row." It also marked the emergence of the skyscraper hotel in the downtown area. The new hotel replaced a previous Hotel Kirkwood that had been built on the same location in 1862. It was located near Union Station and the Rock Island Depot. Developers and owners of the 1930 Hotel Kirkwood were E.F. Tagney and S.F. McGinn. Art Deco details are found in the buildings massing, the sleek exterior geometrical detailing, and treatment of the cornice. The 12-story brick structure rises to a height of 133 ft. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. The building has subsequently been converted into an apartment beuilding called "The Kirkwood."</p><br>
<p>Spital Brook is a minor tributary of the River Lea which rises in Hoddesdonpark Wood in the county of Hertfordshire, England. Spital Brook flows eastwards from Hoddesdonpark Wood, passing through Barclay Park, the former Hoddesdon Common, on its journey to the Lea, while an unnamed parallel stream to the south has been diverted to form ornamental waterbodies located within the former parkland of Broxbournebury. The stream crosses the Roman road, Ermine Street, before going under the A10 and Cock Lane. The original crossing place or ford of Spital Brook in Cock Lane remains and the original route it took ran parallel to the brook in a north-south direction. The brook passes through its namesake area, Spital Brook and marks the traditional boundary between the two parishes of Hoddesdon and Broxbourne. The stream runs parallel to the Lea Valley Lines by Broxbourne Station until it meets the River Lea close to Broxbourne Riverside, the former Broxbourne Lido.</p><br>
<p>Spital Brook&#39;s profile is relatively steep for a Hertfordshire water course, and loses approximately 50 metres of height over the 1 kilometre upper section. Due to the brook&#39;s small catchment area, unless it is raining heavily, only the lower reach is likely to have water in it.</p><br>
<p>The Erbeskopf is a mountain in the Hunsrück range in central Germany. At a height of 816 m, it is the highest point in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, as well as the highest point of German territory on the western bank of the Rhine. It lies within the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<h3>Location</h3><br>
<p>The Erbeskopf lies in the southwest of the Hunsrück and the Idar Forest - forming part of both natural regions - near their boundary with the Schwarzwalder Hochwald, to which it belongs morphologically. Its largest part and the summit are part of the municipality of Hilscheid in the county of Bernkastel-Wittlich. The rest belongs to Allenbach in the county of Birkenfeld. Its northeasterly neighbour, also in the Idar Forest, is the Kahlheid.</p><br>
<p>The streams that rise near on the Erbeskopf are: the Idarbach whose source lies to the northeast below the subpeak of Sandkopf and thus south of the Kahlheid; the Thranenbach, the upper course of the Traunbach, whose source is southeast of the summit; the Hohltriefbach, whose source lies below the subpeak of Springenkopf and is a tributary of the Röderbach which rises northwest of the Erbeskopf; and the Simm to the north, a tributary of the Schalesbach.</p><br>
<h3>Elevation</h3><br>
<p>In 2008 a re-survey of the height of the Erbeskopf was conducted by the Rhineland-Palatinate State Office of Survey and Geobasis Information (Landesamt für Vermessung und Geobasisinformation Rheinland-Pfalz); using two independent survey measurements that each gave a height of.</p><br>

<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>During a military exercise in 1892, sappers built a wooden observation tower on the mountain. In 1894, the Society for the Moselle, Hochwald and Hunsrück (today the Hunsrück Club) decided to construct a stone Emperor William Tower at the summit. This 24-metre-high tower was opened in 1901, 111 steps leading up to a viewing platform. In 1933 a kiosk was built at the entrance to the tower and a weather station installed at the top.</p><br>
<p>In late August 1939 the tower was closed to civilians, three more storeys were added, military signals equipment was installed and it acted as the communication centre for a radio relay link from Berlin to the Atlantic coast. The weather station was upgraded.</p><br>
<p>US troops occupied the Erbeskopf on 17 March 1945. They expanded its military facilities considerably and observed all military air traffic well into the territory of the Soviet Union. Three large radar towers and the Erwin Bunker with the wartime headquarters for Central Europe (AFCENT) supported NATO strategy as a multinational command post during the Cold War. The Emperor William Tower was blown up on 18 August 1961 because it obstructed the all-round military radar picture.</p><br>
<p>In 1971 the 11-metre-high, wooden Erbeskopf Observation Tower or "Erbeskopf Tower" (Erbeskopfturm) was built outside the out-of-bounds area. The tower is of wooden design with three platforms. Although its views are now restricted by trees, in places there are good views as far as the Eifel.</p><br>
<p>In the wake of the political easing of tension between NATO and the so-called Eastern Bloc states the significance of the listening equipment and electronic alarm systems on the Erbeskopf waned rapidly. Half a century after the end of the Second World War, American troops withdrew and the radar site continued in operation by the Bundeswehr.</p><br>
<p>Until August 2004 the summit plateau was a heavily fenced-off, military out-of-bounds area. Since the removal of the barbed wire, most of the summit is now open to the public again.</p><br>
<p>For centuries the Erbeskopf was crowned by a grove of mighty beech trees at the summit. In former times it was also called the Heiliger Hain ("Holy Copse"), although it is not recorded whether it had been a heathen site or Christian shrine. After the Emperor William Tower was blown up and widescale clearing took place, there were only a few remnants to give a poor impression of the original ancient trees.</p><br>
<h2>Today</h2><br>
<p>In 2011 the summit plateau was extensively remodelled. The so-called "conversion project", initiated by a special purpose association, the "Erbeskopf Winter Sports, Nature and Environmental Training Site" (Wintersport-, Natur- und Umweltbildungsstätte Erbeskopf), after the military had handed back part of the area, cost €800,000, of which €554,000 was pledged by the state. The sculptor, Christoph Mancke, in cooperation with landscape architects, Ernst+Partner of Trier, won the preceding competition for the "Use and Design of the Erbeskopf Summit" in a field of 29 participants. The sculpture, which may be walked on, was called Windklang ("Wind Tone") by Mancke and offers not just an outstanding view towards the northern side of the valley (the ski piste), but is also itself visible as a landmark from a long way off. Landscape architects, Ernst+Partner, built another, ground-level object, "Summits of the Region" (Gipfelköpfe der Region), on the plateau, that points to other mountains in the region using concrete axes indicating their the direction, height and distance.</p><br>
<p>On the Erbeskopf there is a leisure and winter sports centre. Three ski lifts operate in the winter and a sommerrodelbahn in the warmer months. In the winter of 2005/2006, the lifts were open for a record 88 days. The ski piste is used in summer as part of the Erbeskopf Mountain Bike Marathon. Since 2007 the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig long-distance path has included the Erbeskopf within the leg from Börfink to Morbach.</p><br>
<p>The Hunsrückhaus at the northwest foot of the mountain is well known nationally as an environmental training centre. It offers an interactive exhibition on the nature of the Hunsrück, a woodland play park, a senses educational path, a weather survey garden, an environmental laboratory and a conference centre with modern media technology.</p><br>
<p>A footpath used to run from the Mark Thalfang into Birkenfelder Land. At the highest point of the way, very close to the summit of the Erbeskopf travellers would stop to say a prayer. This is still commemorated by a stone inscribed with the word Gottlob ("Praise to God").</p><br>
<p>On 29 April 2012 a "sculpture path" was opened on the newly remodelled summit plateau. The six additional works of art were displayed until 15 September 2012.</p><br>

<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Construction of the reservoir began in 1900 as a successor to the Oakwood, Brunswick and Lansingburgh Reservoirs, and it was placed into service in 1906. After eight years of repairs to the original 33 in main, a supplemental 30 in main was installed to stabilize the city&#39;s water supply. Facilities for chlorination, metering and the addition of lime to the water were added in 1952. In 1960, a study determined that the Tomhannock Reservoir could serve the city of Troy and the region immediately adjacent to the city (East Greenbush, North Greenbush, Brunswick, a portion of Schaghticoke, and West Sand Lake) in southern Rensselaer County. During the early 1960s a treatment plant was constructed, which provided filtration and additional supplementation with alum, carbon, potassium permanganate and fluoride.</p><br>
